Hello all, I'm just curious as to what the job market is for PHD's in Molecular biologists once you get out. After 3 years, I love biochem and molecular bio, but I'm concerned about the job market. I know you should do what you love, but my folks are getting old, and I don't want to be a burden and want to even help them out.

Thx,

I don't want to sound cynical, but the job market is extremely tough. It will be difficult finding a position, and even more so trying to secure tenure, which will take several-to-many years. This is also after you work as a post-doc for a few years. Just work hard, get good publications, and get tons of connections.

masta_ace addressed it for academia. In industry, biotech is booming, but it's extremely concentrated into a few areas of the country, so you'd most likely have to live in one of them. You could also work in biodefense for a defense contractor, as a civilian scientist for the DoD or in a national lab, or you could get a commission and be a military scientist (several of the services seem to like life scientists, and some of them will even give you a direct commission or let you start at advanced rank).
