Job placement from Farmer

My son has been awarded a very substantial scholarship and admission to Farmer. We are comparing it primarily to Indiana/Kelley and UMD CP/Robert H Smith business schools. Can anyone tell me about job placement for "average" students at Miami? I am sure there are stories about the best and the brightest getting amazing jobs, and some students not getting any, but I'm interested in the overall picture, and where they wind up. I'm interested in the same information about internships also.

I’m a parent of a senior Farmer student. My impression is that Miami generates a lot of opportunities for the kids. It starts with faculty members who take a genuine interest in the students and provide great counseling. In fact, my daughter felt this was more beneficial to her than she ever received from her academic advisors. Then, there are a lot of opportunities for students to differentiate themselves from the masses, through club participation, leadership positions, study abroad experiences, internships and numerous job fairs. The key is for your student to take advantage of these opportunities. They are not limited to the 4.0 students in any way. You just have to take the initiative to get involved. My daughter said the employers she interviewed with spent very little time talking to her about her academic record but instead wanted to talk about these other things. She accepted an internship following her junior year and a post college employment offer at the start of her senior year. As you might imagine, her Mother and I love FSB and Miami. :-)

Inquisitive…I can’t agree more with everything you wrote!

Thanks for the info. Does your daughter have a job for when she graduates yet? Any impression about where jobs tend to be? I’ve read mostly in Ohio, but do recruiters come from other areas also?

Yes. She accepted a job with the company she interned with. The job is in Ohio but her company has offices in several states and she has the option to transfer if that’s what she wants to do. I don’t have much knowledge about where the kids get jobs. I know that companies from all over the company recruit at Miami. Anecdotally, I know Farmer kids who got jobs in Ohio, New York, Florida and Illinois. But I would guess that since 60% of the students are from Ohio, that’s where most of the employers are located.

Thanks, and congrats to your daughter.
