DS has expressed an interest in working in engineering in the automotive industry. Is there any source to find out where those companies hire from?

I think University of Michigan grads are recruited by Ford and GM. Don’t quite me though.

You can go to companies “career” sites. Some companies post their recruiting “event calendar”. Alternatively, you can go to schools’ career center websites and look up something like “Tech expo”…etc. They would list companies that attend the job fair.

UMich is definitely the usual suspect.

Kettering, in Flint, MI, would be another school to consider.

Thank you! Both UMich & Kettering are on our list. Was wondering about schools a little further south - specifically University of Arkansas, WashU/St Louis, Rice, University of Texas/Austin, to name a few.

I know U of A has an engineering recruiting day. I’ll look on their page to see if GM/Ford are listed as having representatives there. I’ll look a little deeper on the colleges pages.

At first glance, I’m not able to find a recruiting event calendar on the companies’ website, but I’ll keep looking. :)

Perfect! Thank you, cltdad!! I’ll bookmark these.

Here’s an article from Edmunds that makes interesting points about the value of extracurricular automotive design/contests as key for a career in the auto industry. It also lists many of the top schools:

Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and Mercedes minivans and SUVs are all built in Alabama. Those companies recruit at University of Alabama.

BobAdams - Thank you for a link to that article. Very good information.

Chardo - I’ll look at U Alabama, too.

RIT’s mechanical engineering has an automotive option, which is heavily recruited by various auto makers.

The big car companies are fairly well known, and may be easy to find and apply to even if one is at a non-targeted school for recruiting (and, being big, they probably recruit at a lot of schools anyway).

But many of the jobs in the auto industry are at the less well known suppliers, which may be less well known and may have less recruiting resources to visit every college. The midwest of the US and Ontario generally may be advantageous in being more local to more of these suppliers, although some parts of the US south also have auto factories with attendant supplier ecosystems.

beadymom,

Northwestern has a building called Ford Motor Company Engineering Design Center that was built in 2005. The mech engg is highly ranked.

NU has one of the oldest and most well-established co-op programs. About 30% of the students participate.
[At a Glance: McCormick Office of Career Development: McCormick School of Engineering, Northwestern University](<a href=“Programs Overview | Engineering Career Development | Northwestern Engineering”>Programs Overview | Engineering Career Development | Northwestern Engineering) has maps showing different locations of internship/co-op during 2008-10. GE, Ford, and Rolls Royce are on them.

Here is a list of automotive suppliers: [Automotive Supplier Links](http://www.autoconsulting.com/autosupply.htm)

In the vehicle market there are other types of vehicles as well, such as tractors (e.g. John Deere, Caterpillar), large trucks (e.g. PACCAR, Navistar, Volvo/Mack, Daimler/Freightliner), and military vehicles (e.g. General Dynamics).

Mercedes Benz recruits at UAlabama since its only US manufacturing plant is in the area.

Thank you all for your responses! This gives me a lot of new information and ideas of where to look further.

BobWallace - I’m so sorry I typed your name wrong in an earlier post! I have no idea how I got BobAdams!!! :)

Beadymom…what are your son’s stats?

If he’s an eng’g major, then at Bama he would get FREE tuition PLUS 2500 per year if he has at least an ACT 30 and 3.5 GPA (or 1400 M+CR SAT).

The above is a combo of two assured scholarships for eng’g majors. One is from the university and the other is from the Col of Eng’g. Must apply by Dec 1st and the app is live now. Bama has a brand new mega sized Science and Eng’g Complex…amazing.

As Chardo mentions (his son is an incoming frosh), Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and Mercedes recruit at Bama and have plants there.

mom2collegekids - he will be a junior this year. He currently has a 3.9 gpa (unweighted - no AP classes/mostly honors). His ACT score is 34. He will take the PSAT in October. Last year’s score was good, but not high enough for the cut-offs, so hopefully another year of school and some self study will help improve that.

His EC’s include scouting (hopefully Eagle scout by the time application season rolls around next year!), church youth/music ministry, cross country and quiz bowl/science bowl. He will probably add robotics to that list this year.

I have read many great things about Alabama’s scholarships. I will definitely keep them on my spreadsheet! :)
