Job with No Job Experience?

Say someone attended a university like, oh I don't know, the University of Houston. Say said someone had absolutely no job experience and had nothing to show on his or her resume but a high GPA (assume 3.9+ / 4.0). Let's also assume this person is double majoring in some science and mathematics. Understand that this person of interest also has a very obvious lack of awareness of how the real world works.

How likely would said one be in getting his or her first job after graduating, especially in this economy? How would this person maximize his or her chances in getting this first job if he or she were still studying?

Thanks in advance! =)

depends what type of job you’re looking for. but in general, i think you’re probably behind people with 3.3 gpas and internship experience. do you have any ecs or anything that can make you stand out? or do you only have grades? if you wanna maximize your chances, get out in the world more and network

If next year is your senior year, try to get a job on campus - tutoring or research with a professor in one of your major departments. Visit your career center and put together a resume with them. Get your name in their database with your information, particularly your GPA. Go to the department heads and ask them if they know of any jobs in the department or if professors are looking for researchers. Your GPA should get their attention but previous work experience or the skills they are looking for count more. The tutoring center may be the best place to look but try to sign up as early as possible in the semester or even before the semester as they may have a limited number of slots.

See of your departments have an email list where they post job emails. Professors and department heads often receive emails from companies and alumni looking for grads and they should forward them to an email list.

You need to find an internship which involves science or math. Typically it shouldn’t be a big problem finding an internship with your grades but finding a full time job with no experience is extremely difficult.

Make sure you use your college’s Career center. Major companies recruit new graduates directly through the career center of various colleges. It will be very difficult if you try to land a job on your own (i.e. outside of your school career center) without any work experience.
