Jobs after 4 years at West Point

I know that you have a 4 or 5 year obligation after you graduate West Point but I was curious to know what kinds of jobs there are. I am very interested in Finance and hope to one day work on Wall Street and I know that there is no better place than West Point to achieve that goal.

Any information would be great

There are better places for instance, The Wharton School of Business, many of the Ivy League schools would better suit you for your goal. West Point is a good place to learn how to defend your country. That is what it is in the business of doing not creating little Bernie Madoff’s.

Actually, West Point is a great place to learn about leadership, not just defending the country. Some consider West Point to be the best business school because of the leadership learned there. The chairman of the New York Stock exchange, Marsh Carter, is a West Point graduate.

does anyone know if there is any business jobs after your graduate? I know your a officer and you have to serve for 4 years but the government is pretty much a business so I know there has to be something

After graduation you will be a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army. This is not a traditional “government” job but a military leadership role. Depending on your branch you’ll certainly apply leadership skills, but also learn and develop many skills used in business.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with attending West Point with the intention of leaving the Army after serving 5 years. Many officers do just that. However, think long and hard if you are not interested in serving as an Army officer and leading troops. This is the most likely career path after graduation.

Take a look at this link describing branches: branchorientation.com;

There is a finance branch of the army which could be a great way for you to use your interests during your service obligation. Experience in the army combined with a west point diploma can make you attractive to employers and graduate schools. If you stay in the army for more time you can often get graduate school fully funded by the army. However, make sure you are going to west point because you want to serve in the army. Having a second career in mind is fine but don’t go there viewing the service obligation as something you don’t want. Some may disagree but I would say unless you would want to go into the army even if you were to go to a civilian school and take a commission via OCS or ROTC. Otherwise you are taking up spots for kids that want to use west point for what it is for: training officers

Finance is actually going away. Logistics is a new branch.
You can be an infantry soldier and make a great business leader. Harvard Business school and other top business programs actually have graduated a lot of West Point grads.

A West Point grad with 5+ years AD would be a great candidate for MBA. Top MBA programs typically want a candidate with several years of work experience including leadership. Any major will do.
