Hi all,
Not sure if this is the right place to post but here goes..I have been admitted to MS in Material Science at Columbia University, New York for Fall 2010.

I have not received financial aid, and estimated expenses are 71000 USD as per the Columbia website. So I will have to take big loans. I want to know if going there is worth it? Are there sufficient jobs in Material Science and what are the salaries? Specific information about Columbia will be really gr8. Are there restrictions on non US citizens?

I am currently in my last semester of Bachelor in Metallurgy and Material Science, in IIT Bombay, India.

Any info will be helpful. Thanks

In general, a masters degree will not get you a large enough boost in earning potential to cover 71k$. Go someplace you could pay less than 10k$ for and maybe it would be worth it…

Thanks for the reply. Let me clarify. I am in India, and have just finished my Bachelors degree. The job I have bagged now will pay $12,000 a year.

I agree that a Masters is not worth much more as compared to a Bachelors in an American university (and hence, access to American jobs). But, after graduating from an Indian University, as I have, $12,000 is the maximum I can hope for right now. As I understand Masters gives you a salary of $50,000 in US. Even taking the higher cost of living into account, I think its a significant boost over $12,000.

My only doubt is: Is there a problem for non American citizens who graduate to obtain such jobs? Specifically in Material Science field.

71K? The tuition cost is 40000 . Where does that extra 31K come from? I know it’s expensive to live in NY, but I am sure you can get some place to live for less than 31K?

Also, where can you get a quality education that costs less than 10K?

The tuition is 47 k, and living expenses are 24k. I know it can be less than 24k, but I am going by University estimate.

I don’t know enough about Mat.Sci to speak to that specifically but in general, it is pretty hard (right now) to even get work visas from companies (At least according to my Canadian friends). Remember that a company has to look for an American citizen before hiring an international for a job…

Hi Hrishikesh,

I currently have exactly the same queries as you had in 2010, only that am in 5th year (final year) of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering at IIT Kharagpur, & will be graduating with a Dual Degree in 2014.

I believe, you have already completed your MS and it should have been 1 year of your working. Can you please help me regarding the same queries, as I believe you have now overcome them?? I will be really grateful to you.
- Jobs (profiles/salaries/location/nature-managerial,consulting,R&D etc) after MS in material science for Indian students in US. (btw am Interested to get into TAMU because tution fees are less)
- Salary (Interested to go into manufacturing industries/consulting & not R&D strictly)
- Problems related to Visa, (Work/Student visa) if any.
- Best ways to get Financial aids.
I can afford upto Rs 20-25 lacs

Am really in great dilemma, some points bothering me:
- whether to go for MS in material Science or Industrial Engineering (MSIE) or Engineering Management (MEM) (As I am not highly motivated by studying metallurgy and; Industrial engg I have kept it as an option because I want to have an industrial job experience (semi-core related to meta: consulting/manufacturing) from US prior to MBA
- Take a job here in India and do MBA (abroad) after 4-5 years.
- Doing MBA down the line is sure for me.
- MS in materials science: does it really make sense when I already will be having a M.Tech degree from India (One of my reason to keep Industrial engineering as an option because eventually I want to move away from meta after MBA)
- MS in mat sci. will be easier to me than industrial engg because of background as well as for getting financial aids and also I feel confident to do well because of my current 2013 gate air:43 in metallurgy. (cgpa: 7.55; may reach 7.8 after the last 10th semester)

It would be great if we can have conversation over mails/gtalk/facebook.
