Jobs and High School

Do any of you high schoolers have a job? If so, what is it? How many hours a week are you working? What's the pay? Why did you decide to get a job while still in school? Does it interfere with your schoolwork?

Hmm, feel free to skip any question that might be considered an invasion of privacy. I'm seriously considering getting a job and I just wanted to know the experiences of those who have one. Btw, I'm a junior in HS.

I've been out of hs for a few years but I'll answer your question.

When I was 16 I got a job as a dishwasher/bus person at a local restaurant. During the school year I worked 16-23 hours per week (Friday nights and weekends). It started at $6/hr and I finished at $6.50 or $6.75 after two years. I got a job because I wanted my own spending money and to save up for college expenses. My parents could barely pay their own bills and I couldn't rely on them for money.

The job didn't interfere with my schoolwork. It encouraged me to work harder. Dishwashing is a crappy job with a high turnover rate. Hard work for low pay. Definitely not a way to make a good living and hardly any of the guys I worked with had a good living. I had planned on going to college all of my life but that job made me see the true benefit in doing so. None of the other dishwashers wanted the job. They just didn't have any other skills.

Thanks for your answer! It sounds like having a job has a positive side as well (besides extra money). Do you know how much colleges weigh in jobs (for example, is it counted as an extracurricular activity)?

I don't know how much a job is weighed but if a student is able to get grades and hold down a job it shows the school that the student has good time management skills.

i am a lifeguard
i get 8 dollars an hour and work 4 hours a week. lol

what is it? trainer/attendent at a gym
How many hours a week are you working? 9-12
What's the pay? $8/hr and commission
Why did you decide to get a job while still in school? a friend of the family owns it, got it over the summer and didn't want to quit when school started.
Does it interfere with your schoolwork? no, but I don't go a full day. Plus if I have a big test there is no problem with me bringing my books and studying.

... you think that a job is that big of a thing in college admissions?

I'm not sure what you mean by "that big of a thing" but I think it will show some responsibility. Also, since I'm planning on having some type of part-time job during college to help pay off the loans and stuff, this will be good practice. =)

Looks like now all I have to do is find a job with flexible hours. Thanks for the replies!

If so, what is it? Pizza Hut
How many hours a week are you working? 8-12
What's the pay? not enough...lol
Why did you decide to get a job while still in school? I am saving money to go back to my native country
Does it interfere with your schoolwork? a little with schoolwork and social life

Coffee shop person (wait staff?)
12-15 hrs/wk
$6.55/hr
Why? I like the paycheck. I don't have to ask my parents for money and I can go out to lunch without being stingy. I also am saving a hefty sum for college.
Interfere with schoolwork: a little. On the days when I don't work, I tend to waste the time anyway, but hypothetically, I could get a lot more done if I didn't work.

How's the application process? Did you just go around until you found a "Help Wanted" sign, or were there connections? I tried some online searching and mainly found work openings at Home Depot (which is 18+, so I don't qualify) and Chick Filet (not sure if it's spelled right). I've been wanting a job in a bookstore. Should I just go there and ask?

Yes, go and ask. I procrastinated soooo long on applications and missed a million opportunities. No one's going to remember you as the stupid kid who asked if they were hiring anyway. And if they are, hey, maybe you'll get to see a manager right then or something.

Do these (pizza hut, home depot) keep you straightaway or do they select among a pool??

I would love to work at a computer retail store coz I love computers !!!! Can anybody suggest me where to look for? Also how much pay can I expect??

I work about 32 hours a week at a grocery store and I get $7.40 an hour with additional on Sundays... I really enjoy the paycheck :) But it can get pretty hard sometimes as I have all AP classes :(

I'm a HS Sophomore.

I referee indoor soccer games, make about $10-15 a game depending on the age group. I'll typically work 15-20hrs a month, on a good month. Its not very steady, they just call me when they need me.

Does it interfere? No, not really. I manage to make good grades.

Would you trust sites such as http://www.surveypick.com/paidsurveysfw.htm and http://www.paidsurveysonline.com/?hop=mtech4 ? The bookstore I was trying to get a job at just had their Closing sale... Err hahah. Anyways, it seems too good to be true. I'm trying to find a job that has really flexible hours and the survey thing seems perfect. Opinions? Warnings?
