So I'm 16 as of one monthish and am now A) convincing my mother I should have a job B) discovering summer is way too short and C) Really wanting to go to Browns summer camp for 2-3 weeks.
Now A and C are directly related. My parents, while not poor do not have 3,400ish dollars to spend on a college course over the summer and the only way I can see this happening is if I get a part time job now and work 20ish hours a week. This isn't practical especially since my summer is basically full already and I can't very well stop working every other week to do whatever crazy thing I have scheduled next. But guys I really really really want to do this summer program at Brown.. It sounds utterly perfect, it's the cheapest program I've come across and oh my god it would be phenomenal.
B is just a reflection of A and C.
So what are your solutions and how are you fitting everything into your summer?

“a part time job now and work 20ish hours a week”

Good luck with that. Where I work they won’t give me more than 5 or so, I guess because there are adults who need the hours worse.

Couldn’t you just take a community college course? I just don’t see how this could possibly be worth-500-hours-of-burger-flipping awesome.

You sort of have to pick, very few summer jobs will hire you and then late you take of 2-3 weeks (remember that most summer jobs are no more then 8 weeks to begin with). Your best bet would be to work this summer, put the money away and then attend the Brown program the following year. Also know that finding a decent job is easier said then done, I consider myself very luck because it looks like I will be working several jobs (partially due to connections), you don’t want to be working 10 hours a day in the hot weather at a summer camp where they pay you minimum wage or something like that (I know somebody that this happened to).

234 hours =P
And I could and probably will although its not the same at all. You don’t get to live on campus! It’s not really about the credits-- I don’t even think it offers any it’s the ever so fabulous living on a college campus and unfortunately I can’t seem to find any more reasonably priced.
As for the hours… Yeah I’m not too hopeful perhaps I can get a job at my uncles coffee shop too, that would at least give me /some/ hours.
But really it’s a doomed ship I’m just ranting a little now.

It does appear that way, it’s just frustrating because I’m only half way to /this/ summer so thinking about a whole 'nother summer away is just painful. However, I am trying to be sensible here so I do get that.
I’m hoping for a part time job this late February or March, I’ll start applying now to places like Dicks, Target, any place that offers lifeguarding (just certified <3) ect. Time off is going to be a nightmare not only because I have my own things planned but also because my parents love vacations. I get it, but I don’t really want to spend a week in South Dakota when I could be working, volunteering or doing /anything/ else. My parents are very against me staying with a relative though which is I think a big cruel. Forced family bonding time (as well as painfully unproductive) spent in tents hundreds of miles from home or wi-fi.

Siriuss, lets get practical (thought I’d say serious, huh?) here. Say you find a place that’s hiring. OK? You apply, ace the interview, and are now that “new employee”. Right? And, oh, I don’t know, work 20 hours ever week for the next 4 months. Most likely, not saying will, but most likely you’ll get 7 dollars per hour after taxes. You’re not going to hit 3400 dollars. It’s not…practical. You’ll hit 3200 dollars if you work 20 hours a week for five months getting 8 dollars after taxes.

Getting a job is a great idea. It can definitely put a dent in the amount your parents will pay.

Research scholarships. That’s how I got to go to CMU’s AP/EA summer program (6 weeks, $8000) for free. Their scholarship covered tuition for credit courses and room and boarding as well as some smaller things (example: I got a weekly allowance of $12 to spend on junk food and other stuff :D).

“it’s the ever so fabulous living on a college campus”

Won’t you live on one full-time in a couple years or less, though?

There’s a program at the University of Mississippi that offers scholarships depending on your ACT score, but I’m not entirely sure it’s residential.

Mild exaggeration on the time, sorry. My parents would likely pay about half and if I could save/earn the other half it would be doable, But not likely. I don’t have 20 hours a week even if I could work that often so it’s not happening.
I will get a job, and I’ll work /any/ hours they’ll give me the applications aren’t due until the May so i have ample time to see how everything plays out.
Just breathing, yeah?

And I will… Of course I will but I also have 2 years which is 1/8 of my life so far. =P
Yeah? I could take a community college course for 100ish so Im certainly looking.into that

I second Niquii. Jobs are very useful things. I work 4 hours/week as a waitress in a pretty good restaurant. Approximately 2 months (i.e. 7 weeks or 28 hours) worth of work thus far and I’ve been averaging at least $16/hour (including the tips).

How do those work? I live close to CMU, and looked at their programs (but 10,000>>>>>3,000) so I clicked away

Ah, that sounds a lot better!

Enjoy the family vacations (I wish my family took more of them). But really, like I said before, that much time off is not likely, and would probably lead to them denying your request for time off or getting fired. You can’t do everything in one summer, be realistic, also there are free summer programs at colleges (governor’s schools are a great example). Also if you are a part of Pittsburgh Public Schools there is the AP academy which is free.

Haha, I’m being difficult to understand and I am sorry about that. It’s late, within 20minuets I went from very excited to mildly disappointed and tried (yet again) to convince my parents I am not doing track this year. All in all very hard to process and still type legible (is that a thing?)

Haha I like them fine when they are over weekends and only 4 days but the over week long trips we take end up with someone getting mad and me holing myself up with a book refusing to sight see. This leads to the whole “We did not come this far for you to read” and me to pointing out that I would have been happier at home. Yeah no they always end in fighting.
I am quite irritated with the lack of time in a day, it does not leave enough time for anything.
I am not a part of Pittsburgh Public Schools (Im an hour+ outside of the city) and my mum and I actually were just discussing governor schools d’you know anything about them?
EDIT: Just googled them (governor schools) Ill talk to my mum about it in the morning, perhaps that’s a better option anyway the one I’d like is offered at Pitt, which is a school I’m seriously considering anyway <3
