Jobs @ Cornell

I want to work in addition to my work-study, if that's advisable, and was wondering what kind of jobs did some of you current students do and what are the best jobs to get on campus.

If you have lifeguard certification...that's a great job and is one of the highest paying on campus.

I also liked my time at Uris library. My supervisor was fantastic and I had the most schedule flexibility. When I was lifeguard I often had difficulty finding a replacement...but never had any trouble with the library. The libraries only take work-study students.

Dining hall jobs are nice because you get a discount on your meal plan...but that's all I know about them :-)

Just curious...why you want two jobs?

The townies who work in dining halls can be very difficult to deal with, though. I worked at one briefly, but I didn't learn much from it besides who to handle mean adults. But this is also just my experience; I also know a few people who actually enjoyed their dining hall jobs. Like dewdrop said, the benefits are also wonderful, though in order to receive them you have to work two shifts, or roughly ten hours per week.

Library jobs are fairly sought after. You could also clean glassware for labs, do office-related work, maintain websites, work at the fitness centers, run the service centers (I heard this is a nice, relaxing job), etc.

You might be better off just working more hours at the one job rather than getting 2. If they allow you to go above your work study. I wouldn't recommend over booking yourself though. How many hours/week were you thinking?

How do you go about applying for a library job? How do you know which libraries are hiring?

Most jobs can be found here:

As orientation nears employers will post more jobs.

Mann, Uris and Olin will probably be hiring the most students. I just e-mailed the woman at Uris who was in charge of hiring students. I'm not sure who's in charge for Olin and Mann. They'll all be hiring as plenty of seniors graduated.

I need/want two jobs because I know there's a few things I'll be paying for and needing through out the school year and my work-study checks, I think, might have to be used for my financial aid instead of actually being able to keep it.
Really, I'm looking for a 10-15 hr wkstudy and maybe a few hrs on the wkend for the other job

what about at the statler hotel?

i believe hotelies are given priority when it comes to getting a job at the statler, however, that doesnt mean nonhotelies arent overlooked.

work in willard straight!!! i worked there my sophomore year before I started working in a lab as a bio major. I got to work in the ticket office and sell tickets to events. I worked about 8-10 hrs a week and didn't have to work on the weekends AND i got to do homework during my shift. There is also a mail room, cash office, info desk, and candy stand that needs help too. I would definitely reccommend it!!

ok thanks Cornelli! and I will also try the hotel too because that would seem fun!
