Jobs for mathematicians

I've applied for Maths ug. course at Cambridge, UK and I want to get a master (maybe PhD) degree in the US. I'm a bit afraid of not getting a job that I want after the university.
I'd like to keep researching in my interest (networks, probability, cryptography).
What do you think how hard it will be to get a suitable job and not to become a programmer or a living calculator for a bank?

What salary should I expect compared to an IT job?

My impression is that job prospects in math outside of the two areas you discounted are not that robust. Have you checked with your career placement office?

People focused on stats seem to find work as biostatisticians or other kinds of analyst. Also, look at Operations Research. RSA is a big employer in the cryptography area so you may want to see if they are hiring.
