Jobs on Campus

I was recently accepted to Duke, but I didn't apply for FA because we wouldn't qualify. I am, however, interested in a job and was wondering if anyone knew of jobs that non-work study students have?

Thanks!

How do you qualify for work-study? I read the blurb and was confused, I don’t think we have demonstrated need, so am I not eligible for any on campus jobs?

You can do work study but, from what my fin aid lady said, at your income you just don’t do it as part of your package… It’s strange. Call your FA person and check :)

feels so good to be a blue devil…

I might work as a CPS 100 undergraduate TA next semester. It’s definitely not associated with the work study program, but you still get paid for it. I think this applies for all or most of the undergrad TA positions.

There are many lab research assistant positions and TA positions, especially for quantitative classes (e.g. comp sci, physics, math, etc.). Some require work-study, but not all do. A good site to check for jobs when you get to campus is dukelist.duke.edu.

Work-study is only available as part of a financial aid package. That’s because the whole purpose is to provide a way to subsidize your wages to make you more attractive to people hiring you.

However, aside from places like the library or America Reads/Counts, w/e, most jobs on campus do not require you to be on work-study. TA jobs don’t require that, OIT student jobs (last I checked) don’t require it, research positions don’t usually require it, etc.

i agree the work-study policy is confusing as ****. but as a student who doesn’t qualify for financial aid who has held a work-study job for the past 2 semesters, let me try to clear some things up:

-there are 2 different kinds of work-study, duke work study (50% of your pay is subsidized by duke) and federal work study (75% of your pay is subsidized by the federal govt)

-any duke student can get duke work study, there is no financial requirement. for federal work study you have to demonstrate need.

-however, you must fill out the fafsa. i don’t know why. but once you do, explain to them that you only want duke work study, and they can do that.

-do all this EARLY (like, summer) if you want a job as soon as possible. the finaid office can take forever to email you your work study papers under these circumstances (because students who need it are higher priority), but you can’t get paid without them.

-it’s true that most jobs don’t require work study, but all employers prefer work-study students (duh, you only have to pay them half as much) and since it’s possible to get it, they usually won’t hire you non-work-study.
