I get all your points and don’t want to veer too far off topic, but my point was that the traditionally male dominated professions, such as law enforcement, has not have to work nearly as hard as the female dominated ones for recognition and respect (and pay), like social workers, etc.
I just saw a news story about two nurses being shot in a hospital in Dallas.
I know these things can happen anywhere, but the rise of school shootings (in particular) puts a factor into the equation of career choice that was not there 40-50 years ago.
Historically women did not have all the career options that are open to them now. Women who wanted to work became teachers or nurses. Now women can work in any career. One cannot fault them for choosing things that are more lucrative.
I have no answers to how the teacher shortage needs to be addressed. But, fewer and fewer are going to be called to that profession given the abundance of other, better-paying opportunities.
I have always thought of clergy and related work as an example of higher purpose/lower paid work. Many churches run outreach for the poor, homeless, soup kitchens…
