What are some good jobs to have as freshman? Is it better to work on campus or off? What would you say is the monthly average income for freshman? I heard the University puts like a 9 hour limit per week on freshman... is this true? I have experience bussing tables so ideally I would like to find work at a restaurant off campus. Any thoughts?? Thanks.

Yeah you can definitely find a job at one of the dining halls on North Campus. I also recommend working at some of the computer labs- all you really do is sit there and make sure nothing blows up.

is it okay for a freshman to get a job? Like stress from transition into a different lifestyle and all that?

My friends/kids I see on north who seem to have jobs don’t seem to be having too much trouble with it (just don’t take a ridiculous amount of credits or do anything crazy and it should be fine).

During prelim/final times it might be a bit rough though…(you can choose to not go to work that week though)

My older D wasn’t on work study, but she did get a job on campus working 10 hours a week. The nice thing about working on campus is people are more flexible with hours. When D had prelims, she could take time off, they didn’t expect her to work during breaks. If you work off campus, it is not as flexible. Our younger one will be a freshman this fall, and I will expect her to get a job right away. I personally think students are better at managing their time when they are busy. Start checking out career center’s job posting online.

I’d stay on campus to work, at least as a freshman. My daughter works about 8 hours a week and it’s manageable - a minimum wage type salary. She works as a student assistant to a building manager and likes the flexibility of the hours and the fact that she can do school work if she needs to. There are a lot of food service venues to work in on campus. The Statler Hotel hires students, but not sure if it’s just hotel students. The job site does not really get up and running until school starts.

The career job site is up before school starts, that’s how D1 got her job.

Alright thanks… Anyone know exactly the time the job site is up?? Is it like first come first serve for the competitive jobs or do returning kids get priority? And is there some kind of incentive for working at the dining halls?? Bc I’d assume they’d be tougher jobs.

You can start searching now. There is little posted at this point, but you should check regularly. Applying sooner has to be better for many positions. Some will already be filled by returning students. My (incoming freshman) son is applying for a tutoring position. They already offered those positions to upperclassmen. They may have extra slots available. He was told to go ahead and apply.

Now, my question. After we hit submit, it said that the file was successfully uploaded. I was hoping for an automated email confirmation, but that didn’t happen. Do we need to check with the department in a few days to see if they got it?
