I was wondering if John Hainkel scholars are also invited to the DHS reception during welcome week. My dd doesn't feel right asking her admission counselor (thought it would seem ungrateful and is not necessary to be included). After recently discovering this forum, I thought I'd ask the question here as some of you are extremely knowledgable on most things "Tulane".

Just curious because she was required to submit the DHS project in addition to the seperate Hainkel application.

Hmmm, I know my D’s roommate is a Hainkel and she was there last year. They do send out very nice invitations, so I am sure she will get one if invited. But if I learn anything in the meantime I will let you know.

Thanks fallenchemist! I appreciate the info.

BTW, very rude of me not to say congrats on the Hainkel! That is most excellent. Now that I think about it again, since the application is the same as for the DHS PLUS the extra application, I feel sure she will get an invite. I originally thought my D’s roommate got both and took the Hainkel since it is worth more, but I then I saw it doesn’t work that way. The Hainkel is like a super DHS. So I am sure the 2 Hainkel scholars are considered to be DHS winners in this regard.

fallenchemist - Thank you! Needless to say dd was ecstatic (especially since we didn’t receive the important UPS package until Wed and all DHS winners got theirs on Tues). She thought she wasn’t getting anything, but that just made receiving the award that much sweeter. We are off to Honors weekend this Sunday, and hopefully she’ll get to meet some of the DHS recipients then. I hope she gets to attend the reception, but really, the Hainkel itself is reward enough.

Indeed, but the breakfast was really nice!

Also, I can only imagine how amazing that Wednesday must have been after thinking that she didn’t win at all. What a great treat. I bet her face just lit up.

She might want to focus on possible roommate choices this weekend since everyone there will be Honors invitees. Is she thinking of Butler as first choice or is she going another direction? Also, if you don’t mind my asking, where in Louisiana are you from?

No I don’t mind at all. Have you ever heard of Houma? It’s south of NOLA (and for those unfamiliar with Louisiana, yes there are communities south of New Orleans :)). We’re actually the 5th largest city in Louisiana and growing. I think it is actually one of the top ten places to find employment in the US - but don’t quote me on that.

She is definitely thinking Butler, but Wall is desirous too because of those suite bathrooms. She will check them out more thoroughly this weekend. (Her host is in Monroe.) The roommate situation is sticky. One of her friends just found out she will be getting the Legislative scholarship, but finances will be still be tight for her and attendance isn’t certain. D is kinda waiting for her, but a last minute back-up might be necessary.
Hopefully it all works out!

Wed afternoon was great - we surprised her with the portfolio after basketball practice. She ran around the gym, hugged her teammates, swirled d2 in circles, etc. She’s just now returning to Earth lol!

I’ve even been to Houma, many years ago. I am also a Tulane grad, and I have explored many of the Louisiana towns.

If the friend doesn’t end up at Tulane, then she would get to experience the joy of rooming with a stranger. Not a bad idea anyway.

Great story about Wednesday afternoon! Very cool.

Hainkle winners are most welcome at the DHS reception. Hope to see you there, and congrats!

Tulane Jeff! Welcome back!!

We miss ya!

You gonna give us weird CC’ers that crave information for no possibly good reason the (relatively) final stats on the incoming class once it solidifies?

i’m applying for the john hainkel and the question is very difficult. How will you contribute to Tulane in 2025. If you don’t mind telling me, what did your daughter do for her dean’s honor project and what did she write about for her essay?

unknownuser - This thread is almost 2 years old. It is unlikely that person is still reading/posting here, but you never know.
