I heard John Jay College in NY is one of the best schools for criminal justice, which is the major I want. But I also read some reviews on it and every one says the social scene is a mess. I don't want to go to a big party school because I don't drink/smoke or do stuff like that so I'm not that concerned about parties, but I do want to meet some new friends. Are there any other colleges/universities near John Jay where I could meet people? And why do people say it's harder to stay in then to get in? Thanks for reading this, sorry it's kinda long.

Any information would be helpful. This college is on the top of my list.

I’m from California (but both of my parents are from Brooklyn). John Jay is the school my Dad went to years ago and currently the school my brother attends. You’re right, it is one of the best criminal justice schools- my Dad landed a job with the Park Police here in San Francisco and after many years was promoted up to Major of the SFFO. A few years ago he retired from there to work at home (he was sick of commuting 1.5 hours) as a private investigator.
As for the social scene, I don’t think they have dorms. My brother lives with his best friend in an apartment that is meant for NY college kids. It’s actually the dorms for one of the private schools. He has said he’s met a lot of different people there from all over the place and that he knows pretty much everyone on his surrounding floors and has met most of the other people. He also gets to spend time with my extended family. The only real complaints I have heard from him are that a) it’s FREEZING in the winter and B) most of the drinking and parties happen in bars and clubs instead of students places, however that doesn’t stop many of the students (including him) from throwing parties in their dorm rooms. he also said that most if his friends are from the building he lives in rather than from school, which is good if you want to meet more people and bad if you wanted school spirit. Hope this helped!

This helped a lot! Thanks so much! It sounds great to me, I live in Michigan so I am used to the weather. :)

John Jay is known for criminal justice but I can tell you as a New Yorker with a BS in Criminal Justice, it is not as highly regarded outside this area. It will also be harder to meet friends since the school has a lot of commuter and part time students. I would not go there for the social life, it is not your traditional college experience. There are much better colleges for criminal justice, even in New York. SUNY-Albany has always had a great program.

In your state, Michigan State has a very good criminal justice program. I don’t know if you looked there. Don’t get me wrong, John Jay has some great instructors and professors, but it is not a school or experience to leave home for. University of Cincinnati also has a very good criminal justice program.

I am also considering Michigan State… but I lived in Michigan my whole life so I am getting real sick of it and just want to move somewhere else. As for SUNY - Albany and University of Cincinatti, I will take a look at them. Thank you for your help.

Agreed. If you’re looking for football games and pep rallies it probably isn’t the school for you. That being said, a lot of the courses are personalized. My bro said that he has “cop- P.E” which is filled with cool stuff and training for SWAT like or street jobs instead of just running around. I think he lives in a place called St. George Clark. You should check out their housing if you’re interested because housing is huge in NY since everybody wants it.

I will check housing. But besides the other colleges mentioned here, what are other good criminal justice schools? They can be anywhere in the U.S.
