John Jay scholars are usually among the best of the applicant pool. You get invited to special events, get some extra attention from the administration, and a little extra fin aid (grants instead of loans etc.) Denezra has posted some details on another thread. look for it.

yeah, i've looked at most of that. are you or denezra john jay scholars currently? thanks, btw

based on denezra's posts, it would seem so. I'm not.

I was also nominated for the scholars program. A little more info on it would be good.

I'm a scholar, too, but according to C2002 it's not a big deal on campus.

i e-mailed the office about it, we'll see...

i was a CP Davis scholar, class of '06. the scholars all have the same events and stuff, except the Kluges have a few special ones just for them.

Did you meet someone famous? I wish they'd invite Obama.

did anyone else just receive a letter with information about the scholar program? anyway, here was the most useful excerpt:

My fellow Scholars are an incredibly talented group of students from around the world with fascinating life stories. As there are only about one hundred scholars in a graduating class, we are a close-knit community. My three years at Columbia have very much been defined by my participation in the CUSP.

There are many incredible opportunities available exclusively to Scholars- speaker series with internationally acclaimed professionals, unique internships with some of the foremost researchers in the field, leadership and professional development training, alumni networking, and cultural outings to places like Broadway theatres and the Metropolitan Opera.

From the President of CUSP Alliance

Yepp, I got the same thing but it was an email. You actually got a letter?

i meant e-mail. anyway, 1% at least seems possible. i'm not sure if I care about the scholar program so much as i do about wikipedia's reputation. it's certainly quite an honor though.

1%? I thought CC has over 7000 undergrads.

there's a little more than 1000 CC students and ~250-300 SEAS students in each class year. total undergrad population is a little over 5000.

I met a few semi-famous people, but the coolest was definitely a semiprivate dinner with a federal appeals court judge who sits on the 2nd circuit in downtown manhattan. he was really friendly and open to discussing anything except current cases in front of him, and had a ton of good advice. everyone who came in was more of a star in academia than in, say, pop culture. Talking to Jeff Sachs for a few minutes is pretty cool. A few people heckled him about when he was going to teach an undergrad course. I think I asked him what he and Angelina Jolie did on long plane flights to/from africa. Free wine at that event may or may not have been a factor. They were going to invite one of my personal heroes, Arthur Kinoy, to come speak, but he dropped dead like a week before his scheduled appearance date. That kinda sucked.

There were a bunch of others, but I didn't go to all of them my junior and senior years - I was doing more urgent things, like sleeping or playing mario kart =)

Lol, the old school Nintendo generation, ^^... good times btw. I'll def get a WII so I can get my work out done. It might serve as a chick magnet, too, haha.
Yes, when I was asking about famous ppl I meant folks from academia not Bratt Pitt or T. Owens, ^^. Well the program sound def like a good time, I can't wait to meet the other scholars.

Does it make a big difference in finding research opportunities and other competitive activities if you're a John Jay scholar?

Is anyone else trying to choose between John Jay at Columbia and the University of Chicago? I would love it if anyone could share his or her experience on the opportunities offered at either school.

I have the same question. I am currently deciding between Georgetown's School of Foreign Service and Columbia with the John Jay Scholar program. I also wondering whether John Jay is worthwhile enough to sway my decision.

from group e-mails, I know that there were about 40 JJ scholars in my incoming class at Columbia. So 40/1000 = 4% of CC. As far as % of admits, hard to say because it's hard to guess how many JJ scholars enrolled at other schools.
