Johns Hopkins: Cutthroat?

Johns Hopkins has, at least from what I've heard, a somewhat long-standing reputation for its "cutthroat" pre-med program. I have no idea if this is true or not, and I understand that oftentimes these reputations are blown far out of proportion.

Hopkins students, or anyone else who knows JHU: How is the academic environment? Is it overly competitive to the point of being "cutthroat," is it super friendly, or somewhere in between?

It just as competitive as stanford, harvard, northwestern, yale, columbia, Cal Tech, MIT, UCLA, Duke, Rice…aka any top school is competitive because you have brilliant kids all wanting to be the best. Some people are cut throat, some are lax. If you really are worried about cut throat students just don’t apply to any top college lol.

Haha, fair enough. That’s a good point. I assume you’re a JHU student? (by the name BlueJay…)

If so… are you glad you chose Hopkins?

It’s not cutthroat.

My son has not found it to be so. In fact, one of his classmates helped him extensively with his math problem sets until well past halfway point in the semester when son finally figured things out himself. He has also found upperclassmen to be very helpful with his math/science classes.

I am because the quality of professors I had there were outstanding but Hopkins Now is much different than Hopkins when I was there.

^can you explain please?

I haven’t found that to be the case at all. There’s a healthy sense of competition between students, but it is one of camaraderie and goodwill. People at Homewood are always willing to lend a hand, and no one actually considers academics a competition for which success must be achieved by subverting one’s peers.

I think you’ll find that students at Hopkins are exceptionally friendly, and not at all cutthroat.
