No yipyip0901 see post #243 page 17. We’re pretty bummed here too. While an acceptance RD is possible it remains highly improbable. Good luck.

“yipyip”, you may not called to ask why you were deferred, but you can certainly call to see if the TOEFL is something that is required for you. If so, be sure to take it and submit it for RD.

“summerudad”, it is not “highly improbable” to be accepted after being deferred. You are considered the same as any other RD applicant, so acceptance is somewhat “improbable” in the sense that only 27% of the RD pool is admitted. But being a deferred applicant does not put you at a special advantage or disadvantage compared to the rest of the RD pool. It’s also worth noting that while the admit rate is higher for ED applicants, it’s due to the fact that there are more qualified applicants in the ED pool, not that it’s easier to get in ED. ED and RD applicants are evaluated in the same way. Your son has an opportunity to update his resume, as well as show that (hopefully) his senior year is progressing well academically when he submits mid-year grade reports. He can also send an additional rec and/or a letter of continued interest. So, his RD app could potentially be stronger than his ED app was, which could make a difference come decision time.

It’s understandable to be bummed, but don’t make it sound worse than it really is.

Bluejay10. I have quite a number of years on me and as such a wealth of experiences with a variety of people. I’m a 50’s model. Regular decision applicants are the ones who will be applying to a variety of top tier universities. They are the ones who would not commit until all their options were explored.
Thus the applicant pool becomes even more competitive. What a deferral is , is a polite way of saying if someone more fitting of our criteria doesn’t come along you will do. With the flood of high quality applicants whose 1st choice wasn’t Hopkins via the ED process arrives the probability diminishes. I am fully capable of reading the accepted applicants backgrounds and the pattern of the criteria that was the overarching element to ED acceptance. There is no animosity on the part of anyone here. It is what it is and that is life. I will say several of his friends at Hopkins and those he met at Summer U. are shocked he wasn’t accepted. He will be firing off his app to many other fine colleges in the next few days. Free agency yields competitive bidding, i.e. bigger financial packages. No matter what, he enjoyed his time at Hopkins and so you know the Summer U. experience was still tremendous. Hopkins was his only choice but other colleges were always in the realm of possibility. Again to those accepted, congratulations, Hopkins is an amazing place. If he is accepted RD terrific, unfortunately the bloom is off the rose.

Fair enough. So, how many of those many years have been spent working in college admissions? Specifically, Hopkins admissions? :)

My best advice would be to take a step back, stop stressing and let your son handle the process. He will be fine, no matter where he ends up, as long as he makes the most of his experience. Good luck to him.

Their deferrals are probably the let-them-down-easy ones.

for anyone who got in, can you give me some advice?

Im a freshmen in high school. I really want to go to johns hopkins and i need some advice

1) Get off College Confidential.
2) Do what you love and let colleges bid on you.
3) Don’t live for college admissions.

^^^^couldn’t have said it better myself.

WealthOfInformation is spot on.

There is never a formula for getting into college. Colleges like Johns Hopkins want interesting, passionate students who strive to do more with their lives than get straight As in high school. Find something you love and pursue it. Spend the next few years in high school doing things that make you happy and feel good about yourself, not worrying about Johns Hopkins on College Confidential.

Have fun in high school, literally.

Anyone find it annoying when you have to correct people with their JohnS…my own parents do it!(every once in awhile granted)

^^ Yeah. I feel like such an ass when I do it, but I feel obligated to correct it anytime I hear it.
