@Jsteez, thanks for that answer. I assume then that all the students interested in engineering take pretty much the same courses freshman year. Do they then simply designate their major…or do they have to compete to get into particular engineering majors?
I applied ED to BME. About 50 days until decisions come out. Scared for how much my family and I will have to pay.
@Sam-I-Am They designate their major and then take very basic overview courses of each engineering discipline but are not required for the major. For example you can take the freshman mechE intro and decide it’s not for you and switch into chemE without having taken their kinda brief intro to chemE course. Besides from that they all take traditional low level requirements such Calc 1-3, DiffEq, Lin Alg, Chem to Ochem, Physics…
Thanks @Jsteez! If my ED engineering applicant has straight As in math but only a “3” in AP Calculus BC, and is currently taking a semester of Calculus 3 followed by a semester of differential equations at a local college, which math class do you think should be taken as a freshman (if you know)?
Would recommend beginning at calculus 1. Rigor of jhu math is much harder than other unis. (Took calc 3 in hs as well). @Sam-I-Am
If a high school senior is interested in biomechanics engineering, then they apply directly to that major when they send in their JHU application?
You can put any major down on the application, but you’re not admitted to any specific major unless you pick BME. As @JSteez wrote, you choose your major at the end of either freshman or soph year. @Sam-I-Am
Thanks for that answer @smileythunder; so is it harder to get into JHU if you put down BME? Also, can a student easily choose BME once on campus? My kid is interested in environmental engineering, so I am asking mostly out of curiosity. However, I would like to better understand how things work before agreeing to allow my kid to apply ED.
You can’t switch into BME once you arrive on campus. It’s not harder to get into the school. Your BME application gets reviewed by a separate committee. There are lots of students who get into the school but not the BME program. @Sam-I-Am There’s no difference of being accepted by major that I know of.
So a JHU student can switch into any engineering discipline other than BME? With BME your JHU application must specify BME. I think I got it!
@Sam-I-Am you are correct!
@Sam-I-Am There is a math placement test that you take in the summer before school starts
@WCEdmonds Hello! My SAT is a 1400 and my ACT is a 30
I used the Additional Information section of my common application to write about my unique experience growing up as a first gen college student and how jhu’s programs would be beneficial to me. If I sent it along with my application, would it hurt my chances of getting in by sending too much information? I’ve aleady sent an additional recommendation from the facility in which I volunteer.
@bionerd1299, I think that is a good use of the Additional Info section of the common app. I don’t think the essay would constitute “too much information.” Nor will submitting an additional rec cause any kind of problem. Good luck!
My kid applied regular but wants to switch it to ED today. Anyone know how to do that? We are going to have the GC send the form to admissions. Last day to do this, so far as I know.
So my kid’s application was successfully switched to ED! We have had no time to consider scheduling an interview. Does JHU offer alumni interviews? If so, how is one requested?
@Sam-I-Am , in the campus visit registration page, you select alumni/campus interview as one of the options
@Sam-I-Am Hello! When I completed an overnight visit there, I asked about the interviews and they said that the interviews are only used to inform students who cannot actually visit JHU about programs. They said that interviews are not considered in the application process. I wish they would change their website to avoid misconceptions though.
@bionerd1299, OK thanks for the info!
