About a month ago, I received an invitation via email from JHUMUN to participate in the 2011 conference. Any MUNers out there, can you give me feedback on what the conference is like and how high the level of competition is. I founded a MUN club at my school and we competed at only one conference, a global classrooms one. Is it possible for my team of four inexperienced MUNers with academically intense schedules to not completely embarrass ourselves at the conference?

My school has a pretty small team (16ish kids) and we compete every year at MUNUC (uChiago), which is really big competition. From my experience there, your level of participation is completely up to you. If you don’t want to get involved, you don’t have to. Some kids get really into it, others don’t really participate at all. I know at MUNUC small teams got smaller or less relevant countries (we were Niger), so it’s harder for you to make a huge impact either way. The kids I met there were 95% extremely friendly and approachable, with only one or two countries (Botswana comes to mind… ugh) that were snobby and looked down on everybody else. MUNUC wasn’t really that competitive though, so I don’t know how relevant my experience will be to the Hopkins MUN. Either way, I say go for it, and have a great time!
