Johns Hopkins or Carnegie Mellon?

Hey everyone :)

So what do you think? What are the pros and cons for each?

I applied for chemistry for both, but if I go to JHU i might do pre-med!

thanks

Both are great schools, but if you want to major in chemistry, JHU might be the one you want go

I agree - I think JHU has a great chemistry department and very strong students from around the world to study with. I’d say go visit but lean towards JHU. GL with your choice!

same deal… but i’m got into both for engineering. anyone have any thoughts?

If CMU was in a better city then I’d think about it, but the only thing that makes hopkins less than a definite “go” is the fact that its in a bad neighborhood… JH spends like a billion dollars on research, and its considered by many to be one of the best research institutes in the world. so JHU, imo, but then again im not a current student, im facing a similar question with JHU, Tufts, and Boston U.

My son had the same choice last year. He did an overnight at each and decided on JHU based on athletics (NCAA team vs club at CMU). I think the two schools have a bit of a different vibe. CMU tends to be more nerdy, quirky and a bit frenetic while JHU is more mainstream (think lacrosse), more preppy, and more sedate. Having said that, my son is actually nerdy and quirky (and probably fit better at CMU in that regard) but has been perfectly happy at JHU and has managed to find like minded people. I think you should visit both, do overnights and see what kind of a feel you get from each.
