which is the best choice? I probably want to go to law school, major in something english related. PLEASE HELP ME. would it be foolish to give up JHU for NYU? Is it really that much more prestigious/help me find a better job or admission to a good grad/law school? HELP.

First, JHU is a prestigious university. If you love it, and you prefer it to NYU, then going there is a reasonable choice. It certainly won’t hinder your ability to get into a good grad or law school.

Second, Gallatin is NYU’s continuing/adult ed program, yes? That’s less prestigious than their programs for traditional aged students.

no, Gallatin is a program where your create your own major. It is pretty selective, heavy emphasis on writing. It’s no Stern, but its a good school in NYU. A lot of interning (which i figure may lead to work?) How is NYU in general in comparison to Hopkins, from an employer or grad school’s point of view?

^ Thanks for that. I did confuse Gallatin with NYU’s continuing ed dept, then. My bad.

From an employer’s POV, JH is the stronger school. It’s also more highly ranked as an overall uni than NYU is.

In addition, in terms of the English major in general, NH outranks NYU. However, if your focus is scriptwriting/screenwriting, NYU is the far stronger program.

In terms of law school admissions, either school is fine. Again, JH is more highly ranked than NYU, but it’s not like NYU is low ranked at all.

You said, in your OP, that you prefer JH. You lose nothing by chosing JH instead of NYU, and if you actually prefer JH, bonus!

haha, thank you so much. If i prefer nyu, is it a bad call to let the prestige of JH go? Cuz i like JH, but i like nyu a whole lot too.

Gallatin is extremely well-respected from those who know about it and will not have a significantly less prestige if you intend on staying in the NE, depending on what you study.

That being said, Gallatin is a program with many advantages and many disadvantages. I know one transfer from Gallatin to Brown and I’ve met some of her friends who stayed (and left) Gallatin as well and they all had their share of loves and hates about how that school functions in practice.

Certainly for something like law school, prestige won’t matter at all between JHU and NYU. If you want to work in the city afterwards, the Gallatin internships certainly will help.

To be honestly, academically/curricularly, the two experiences are so unique I would think you already have a clear favorite and should go with that.

Have you visited either schools or what is the financial aid like?

Hopkins has a top 10 English and really good creative writing program (#2nd in the nation think…)

Both NYU and Hopkins has really good placement into law school… JHU’s around 92% and I’m not quite sure NYU…

I mean, if the costs are the same, go to the school you feel will fit you best…

thank you so much! So you really think JHU isnt SO much more competative than NYU? modestmelody, what did your friends not like about gallatin?
