I’m an international student and I just got into Johns Hopkins and Wesleyan. I am really unsure of which one I want to go to. Maybe I want to study neuroscience but I’m not 100% sure, maybe I’ll change my major. Also, I’d like to have a university that will give me the opportunity to start my writing career. What do you think?
I would choose Hopkins if your interested in anything relating to the medical field. Hopkins is one of the best schools in the nation. While Wesleyan is an excellent school as well, Hopkins will be an invaluable asset.
Two excellent schools. I’d guess that Hopkins has the edge in the sciences and Wes may be stronger for writing. Also consider which environment you’d prefer or be more successful in – a somewhat artsy LAC n kind of quiet part of CT or a more science driven university in Baltimore
Hopkins is known to have a very competitive stressful pre-med environment. It is something you should be aware of. But academically it is highly regarded for medicine.Wesleyan is very artsy with a more laid-back atmosphere.
Contrary to some general perception, Johns Hopkins is renowned for its humanities too.
Its writing program (writing seminars major) is absolutely top notch. Unfortunately it’s like MIT, where the general public does not give much credit to the undergrad or grad business program although it is also elite.
But for people who know, Hopkins has an elite writing program - not sure about Wesleyan.

(Not surprising to see MIT show up in the above to those in the know)

Wesleyan is pretty well-balanced between science and the humanities. It’s widely considered the most “university like” of the nation’s top LACs. And, while there is a writing program, the more important fact is that the proof is in the pudding: the place produces writers at an extraordinary rate. The creator of Mad Men; the guy who popularized the phrase “a perfect storm”; the guy who (for better or worse) gave us Jason Thorne; an Academy Award winning screenplay writer; Buffy and Firefly creator, Joss Whedon; current wunderkind, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and numerous song writers have all graduated from Wesleyan.
