It is only two days away from the deadline and I really need some advice here. For now, I want to major in econ, interested in but not sure about business as I haven't taken any classes (my dad wants me to choose the business track though as he is running a company.(so he thinks wash u is better for me). And I will definitely go to business school after graduation.

I have visited both schools but became even more confused after my visits. Academically, I feel Hopkins is a better fit to me, I like that Hopkins doesn't have a strict core requirement and I am able to take pass/fail the first semester, and therefore able to explore some classes that I would not dare to explore, like engeneering. Yet socially, I feel I like wash u is better: their food and dorm are better and I have a couple friends there. But they have more strict core requirements and a few students told me their econ department isn't good when I visited, different from what I heard when visited to JHU's econ (but they don't even have a business school).

Any suggestions and thoughts are deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance for spending time helping me out!!!!!

It sounds like you’ve summed up the situation well.

I don’t know about Wash U’s econ department – but would be less concerned about this on the undergraduate level.

Otherwise, you have a difficult choice, and it looks like you’re considering the main points. Fortunately, both are excellent schools there really is no ‘wrong’ choice.

The only thing I can really recommend – give yourself 10 minutes to think about it. Then go with your gut, make a choice and don’t look back.

I have to say I’ve never heard of people coming to JHU/WUSTL for econ. If it matters at all, though, WUSTL has the Olin school of business although it’s not an elite one by any measure.

Both Hopkins and WUStL have good Econ departments. Looking at USNews, they’re ranked 25 and 28, respectively. I certainly would not be concerned about getting a sub-par education at either – both are absolutely excellent schools.

I don’t think you should be concerned about JHU not being as good socially as WUStL – I’ve never heard anything about either school.

Pick whichever one you feel most comfortable with and where you feel you will do best.

I know WUSTL is very flexible, so if you want to pursue more than one major, have a minor, or switch if you change your mind, you can definitely do that. Though, I know very little about JHU, so it may be the same there.

Hopkins has a terrific business school although it is brand new so it doesn’t yet have the prestige of the more established schools. But it soon will. Check it out [Johns Hopkins Carey Business School Home](http://carey.jhu.edu/)

AdmissionsDaniel recently addressed this. Business at JHU is fundamentally different from WUStL and most other elite universities offering undergraduate business.

thanks a lot for all these helpful advice, I think I have a better understanding of my situation now. The kind of program Carey offers is not I need as it has been said that it’s mainly for parttime students. And indeed, Johns hopkins is flexible with double or even triple major too. Now, I would like some ideas about how location affect students’ life in these two schools as I didn’t have opportunity to go to check out the cities because I joined the admitted student program and basically spent the whole time of my visit on campus. I know both Baltmore and St.louis are dangerous cities, but Wash u is in a nice suburb while JHU in downtown. However, baltimore is close to DC while st.louis is in the middle of no where. BTW, I am a male if that matters.

WU not in a dangerous area at all. Hopkins on the edge of one. Hopkins econ department is excellent. Not sure if that is strength of WU or not. Given you like Hopkins program better, I would chose Hopkins. You will be able to find food and fun in Baltimore.

I am actually having very different comments on Hopkins’ econ. Could u elaborate on why Hopkins’ econ dep is excellent? Thanks a lot for your insight~

Olin business school ranked 8th. Economics as a major taken in arts and sciences is not strong at wustl but taking economics and strategy (called consulting at washU) inside the business school is incredibly strong
