rejected
It is very random - thereās sometimes a quota to fill, and if you just donāt fit the standard, you may not get in. I am not being pessimistic, thatās always been my take on admissions to prestigious universities.
Big congrats to those who made it in!
Accepted. Canāt believe I actually have a chance to post stats. (Already rejected by UChicago and Columbia)
Originally from a national university ranked around 20. International student. Rising Junior.
College GPA: 4.0/4.0
HS GPA: 3.5
SAT: 1540
TOEFL iBT: 116
Major: Economics
Work experience: TA for three intermediate courses, previously took a gap year and founded an online organization, a few interns at my hometown.
College ECs: Leadership role in college council, advisory member in the university-level student government, officer of my honor society, visual designer of my communityās newsletter.
Others: Passed the highest level of Japanese proficiency test (I donāt have any Japanese background but I just studied by myself because I love anime.); Voice acting (I can perform over 10 distinct voices without letting people recognize thatās me); Photography (attached my photography portfolio link and sent it to JHU, not sure if they actually viewed it.)
Essays:
In my common app essay I wrote that my current university doesnāt satisfy my interest towards a specific branch of economics. I also wrote that being a person who loves a bunch of visual arts and popular cultures, I found that my current school has limited resources in those fields. I talked about what I have already done in school and why I found that transferring would enable me to do more.
In my why essay I just elaborated on the previous two statements and talked about the courses and resources at JHU that greatly meet my needs.
Recommendations: I got one from my econ professor with whom I took an intermediate course and a 400 level course. Another professor is my Japanese professor with whom I took two 400 level Japanese courses.
Rejected - Chemistry major. Earned a 4.0 average in honors program freshman year from a top 40 school, so was still hopeful this time around. Heās not letting it get him down, just like all of you, just taking it in stride. Will try again several years from now for medical school. Funny thing is, he turned down Emory before he realized he was interested in going to medical school. Thatās okay, though, his heart belongs to JHU.
ACCEPTED!
Made a college confidential account to post in this thread.
I canāt believe I actually got inā¦the moment I opened the decision link and saw the words āYOUāVE BEEN ACCEPTED TO JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY,ā my heart just dropped and I felt like I was going to die of happinessā¦ I thought I had a NEGATIVE chance of getting in because of my statsā¦
Stats: Iāll go further into detail later since Iām just too excited right now to post
Non-traditional student who has attended two previous colleges (one university, one community college Honors program)
College GPA: First college (university) GPA was abyssmal, Second college (CC) GPA was ~3.985
HS GPA: Actually canāt rememberā¦did pretty well freshman to junior year, major grade drop in senior year (Senioritis, woohoo!)
ACT: 34
Applied for Economics
Asian-American (Korean)
I got rejected from a lot of different schools since Iām sort of on the non-traditional path. Iām so happy that JHU accepted me, and this goes to show that even if you get rejected at a bunch of other very selective schools, you never know where youāll be accepted!!
I think my essays and recommendations really stood out. I made sure to develop really strong relationships with my professors inside and outside of the classroom so that they had a lot to write about when it came to college recommendations. I ended up submitting more than 3 recommendation letters, which I thought could negatively affect my chances of getting accepted, but apparently it worked for JHU.
Although I might not attend, I hope to get to know some of you! PM me if you want more specifics~
@jcolestan Congrats!! I also saw you on Cornell thread! Wish you the best!
Hey guys I was wondering if JHU sends some sort of acceptance package with a t-shirtā¦
Just curious cuz I know some other colleges send out free stuff
@NotJohn Thank you so much!!! YOU TOO!!
Does the facebook group page work for anyone?
@krystalee I clicked the button but the page is not found.
@BlueJaysEconnn I received an acceptance package the other day! But it didnāt include a shirt (T_T)
@tokkiya
Iām so sad they didnāt send out some sort of shirt, pennant, or even something small like sunglasses :ā(.One of my other schools sent out a free shirt!
Also I see that youāre a fan of Zero Two :D. As a fellow transfer, are you looking to commit to JHU? Seems like Iām probably going to choose this school and itād be nice to make a friend before school starts haha.
Btw, does anyone know what the acceptance rate was for transfers this year?
Was anyone else not expecting that tremendously large deposit amount? D:
@PotentialBlueJay yes I love DITF and Zero Two!! Yes, I have already committed to JHU. Iām hoping that Iāll be able to make some friends through this thread before school too! I believe the acceptance rate was around 10% or lower, looking at past years?
@jcolestan yeah, RIP my card
Ahh also, how did everyoneās grades hold up in Spring semester? I actually took a look and mine arenāt doing so well Do you think that my acceptance could be revoked?? If so, should I e-mail JHU and explain the situation or something?
@tokkiya I have a 3.82 right now I believe, Aās and one B. But I read on the JHU website that although the credits will transfer over the grades we received at the previous institution wonāt show on our JHU transcript, just that we got credit for them. So as long as you have above a C (or even a C- maybe?) in each class you should be good
