I was accepted to JHU and I plan to major in physics. I think I would rather go to Notre Dame but I am worried that I will give up the better physical science program (JHU) if I choose to attend Notre Dame if I am accepted. Can anyone compare physics at Notre Dame to JHU? Is there a real difference in the quality of the programs?

I will bump for now and can look it up later if people don't respond but I don't think there is that big of a difference honestly from what I have heard. I can't say for sure though.

thanks

also if anyone can compare it to the Honors Program at BC that would be helpful

...i may be doing research by the looks of it. if you still don't have a response later this afternoon ck then email me and I will look it up and combine that with the experiences of my friends and try to give you some sort of comparison.

haha. my dad went into Notre Dame w/ physics and was so amazed by the business program he changed majors!

If my dad went there for physics, it's probably pretty solid.

Plus the alumni thing, c'mon.

As for jhu, I got in, too, so I'm not trying to give you a biased opinion. It's just...jhu is so unfriendly. It's terrible. I was happy I got in, but I wrote it off because so many people think of you as an enemy, not as a friend. Also, is jhu that good for physics? You might want to look up the rankings.

Good luck with the decision.

I am researching it as we speak but keep in mind that ND is just about to open that nice new science building so you will have some of the best facilities in the country and you will have less competition from what I have heard. Check out their website and you will see what ND has to offer...I am still looking for rankings. http://www.physics.nd.edu/index.htm

For what it is worth, here is one list of rankings. I have no idea how they came up with this, how old it is, and it is probably for grad students. I believe that I saw Hopkins was 26th and ND was 55th but that may change and it may be old. Also, look at the facilities both schools have! I know that isn't all that helpful but for what it is worth, I hope it helps.

I know some Physics majors on campus and they told me that it is a top program, and that the nuclear physics is one of the top of the world (something about having multiple particle accelerators....) but I can't be sure. I do know though, that a friend of mine who got a 1600 on his SAT came here to study physics, haha. Good luck with your decision!

I found one ranking that put JHU at 7th and ND at 44th and another with ND at 38th and JHU 43rd. Also, both appeared on a list for the "best graduate programs in physics." So, whatever your feelings about the rankings may be, I'd suggest that you check out the research facilities and other opportunities at both schools (ND's new science building should have a lot to offer) and figure out which school environment you prefer. Good luck!

hey ckmets13. i got accepted to JHU and ND too and I cant decide either. My major is chemistry though. But I've been thinking about my decision since December and I still haven't made up my mind; so I totally know how you feel.

And genevievecour, where'd you decide to go instead

just go to Notre Dame, dude.

the only sport JHU has is lacrosse. I mean... football vs. lacrosse? no contest

From someone who spent two years in the College of Science before he got burned out on science and bailed, I offer the following comments.

Althogh I was Biochemistry and not Chemistry, I do believe both problems are pretty strong. They have some really solid professors who teach these classes and who do some pretty cool research if you want to work in a lab. I know a couple of friends who are already going to have published one or two papers before they graduate undergrad. While they're not the principle author, that's still an impressive way to start your CV for grad school.

As for physics, I've never heard anyone bash that dept either. Kid down the hall is a physics major and he seems to be doing fine. While he doesn't plan on pursuing physics in grad school, that's mainly because he dislikes physics, not because he hasn't learned anything.

dont worry about it anymore, i wont be at ND since i was waitlisted

i suck at life

I am sorry :(. If you want ND you still can get on the waitlist, send in new materials and see what happens! Let me know if you want to do this.... and no, you don't suck at life.... life just sucks sometimes.

dang dude, sorry to hear that. good luck with whatever school you choose.
