Johns Hopkins vs. Tufts vs. Georgetown

I'm trying to decide between these two schools. I think I might major in a hard science and follow a pre-med track, but my dad wants me to be a dentist (which is what he's doing). Here is what I think about the three schools

Georgetown- Located is a great area, in a great city, good academics, I'm unsure about the strength of the pre-med program, prestigious. Has a second year admittance to medical school.

Johns Hopkins- Highest US News rank, great in sciences, but very competitive which might lead me to have a lower gpa than at georgetown. Not located in a great area

Tufts- good pre-med, but has the lowest prestige among the three. Closest to home, my dad has connections to dental school and is a graduate of the dental school. Has second year admit program to dental and medical schools.

I also plan to be active in music in college like in orchestra and might take lessons

Comments?

I say go to Johns Hopkins. It's program is wonderful, and the opportunities that can be sprouted from an undergrad at hopkins are great! Hopkins is known for its sciences and the "pre-med" track so grad schools will see that...most grad schools know that a 3.2GPA for instance can be translated to 3.7 or 3.8 at most of the other schools.

And, if you planning to do music, then nothing beats Peabody Conservatory! I'm possibly doing a double major in violin performance and International Studies from the joint program at Peabody & JHU. I've talked to many professors, and they have said that it's fairly easy to audition for the orchestra and take lessons from Peabody if a teacher is willing.

If you do go to JHU and you succeed, then you'll know that you belong with the best of the best in your major...

Good luck!

I agree - the Peabody Conservatory @ JHU is one of the strongest resources for Hopkins undergrads.

I'm just afraid of the overly competitive pre-med classes with the best pre-med students in the nation fighting for that "A"

OMG. If you are looking to do music, Johns Hopkins Peabody Music Conservatory is ranked among the best in the nation. To travel to and from the Peabody Conservatory is fairly convient. JHU runs a JHMI shuttle that goes to and from Homewood campus. A large amount of people utilize this shuttle to travel between the medical school and the homewood campus. The Peabody Conservatory is located in BEAUTIFUL area of Baltimore right next to a historical neighborhood with a great monolith dedicated to George Washington himself and is next to the Walters Musuem of Art. Beautiful.

I cannot stress to you how perfect Hopkins will be for you if you are interested in doing premed and doing MUSIC.

To be honest, Tufts is by far the best for Dental. I grew up in the Boston area and always pass by Tufts Dental School. They have a great practice hospital called the New England MEdical Center. Tufts is really well known for Dentistry and is alright for premed. It is known as a lower tier premed school.

Don't let the area around Hopkins fool you. The campus security patrols night and day on segways and cars. It is a very safe neighborhood surrounding Hopkins. The administration has funneled millions of dollars in improving the safety and security of students. Unless you venture too far say, say into the blue light district of Baltimore, THATS when you be afraid. Then again, the blue light district is near Inner harbor region which is far away from Hopkins campus, so you don't have anything much to worry about so long as you in a safe distance away from the campus itself.

Pros:
Hopkins undegrad can get research internships and positions at the presitigious medical school. Frequently, high profile doctors and researchers from the medical school give lectures in general biology classes like in the workshops about variety of topics concerning their research such as genetics of breast cancer among other things.

Hopkins has a 90% premed acceptance rate into Med school. That is on par with most of the best premed Ivy schools.

JHU's premed comittmee is highly respected and well known among the medical school circle for compiling a lengthy and comprehensive letter of recommendation for you when you apply to med school that will be read by admissions officiers regarding you overall as a student. This university stamp of approval is one of big secrets that most premed students are not aware of that is why Hopkins is so highly regarded among the medical school circles in terms of the recommendation letters they give to students. Keep that in mind.

Georgetown I always though was great for IR, politics, government. I never thought it has a strong hardcore science program like Hopkins. Hopkins is synomous with medicine and is internationally known for its science programs.
