Johns Hopkins vs. UMD College Park vs. Carnegie Mellon

<p>Hey everyone! I need to decide between Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland College Park, and Carnegie Mellon by May 1st. I am very interested in electrical engineering but also enjoy some computer engineering and computer science topics. I'm looking for opinions and advice unrelated to the costs of each school. Here are my influences:</p>

<p>Johns Hopkins:
School: Whiting School of Engineering
Special Programs: Dean's Innovation Group
Concerns: The reputation for competition among students as well as for poor athletics/social life.</p>

<p>UMD College Park:
School: A. James Clark School of Engineering
Special Programs: Banneker Key Scholar and Honors College - University Honors (the generic honors program)
Concerns: College Park's poor reputation as a college town.</p>

<p>Carnegie Mellon:
School: Carnegie Institute of Technology AND School of Computer Science
Special Programs: none
Concerns: Reputation for poor athletics.</p>

<p>I would never consider myself a partier but I am concerned about missing out part of the college experience, like attended school athletic events.
Any advice or suggestions are welcome! Thank you!</p>

<p>I would go with either Johns Hopkins or UMD. I feel like they both have better programs than CMU. As for missing athletic events as part of the college experience, if sports/school spirit matter to you, you should definitely weigh that heavily. But I’m not into sports events at all as are a bunch of people and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything (went to one football game and hated it). But UMD definitely has more of that stereotypical college feel.</p>

<p>I guess the point is, it doesn’t really matter THAT much (if at all).</p>

<p>Don’t let CP’s “reputation” be a deciding factor. You can always stay on campus or go with friends to DC via bus/metro. Especially as a freshman, there are a lot of activities planned around the sports teams and even for my less-than-sports-team-focused daughters, they really enjoyed the school spirit that sweeps everyone up. You can continue that throughout school if you are interested, or drift away from it if it’s not your “thing”. UMD’s engineering and comp sci programs are awesome, and if you are full B/K, you can’t beat the price!!!</p>
