My choice has come down to USC vs Johns Hopkins for various reasons, and I'm pretty sure I can get into both. I want to go to do finance and eventually get an MBA someday. Hopkins doesn't have an undergrad business school but probably has more prestige. Any thoughts? Would I be giving up much by choosing USC?

I agree that JH is more famous and I’d choose it, not because of its prestige but because I’ve been to USC several times and the university is not located in a good college environment. If you’ve ever heard about it, the campus itself is very small, maybe a block and outside the campus, it’s just pretty ghetto (Los Angeles area). For me I want to live in the atmosphere where I can study effectively and don’t have to worry about other things.
Listen to other comments though because perhaps I exaggerate too much and beware that I know nothing about JH honestly, except that it’s really famous worldwide.

Hopkins offers a BBA through their Carey School of Business. You can learn more about it here:

JHU may beat USC on several factors, but neighborhood / good college environment certainly isn’t one of them. JHU is also located in a dangerous area similar to USC. In this factor at least, I doubt there’s much difference between the two.

OP, if you want to work in the east coast, I’d say go to JHU; if you want to work in the west coast, go to USC.

Well thanks, I sure wouldn’t want to break any rules, would I? Haha I’m just trying to get a different comparison than saying I’m at JHU and thinking of transferring. The real situation is that I’ve visited USC and absolutely loved it while I can’t say the same of JHU to say the least. I just don’t feel completely right about transferring.

I’m sure a lot more people have heard of USC than Hopkins.

I agree with Bephy in that if you want to work on the east coast, go to JH. If you want to work on the west coast, go to USC. Their academic reputations are similar enough so that there isn’t much of a reason to pick one over the other on that basis.

Well, also consider that everyone can spell “USC” while hardly anyone can spell “Johns” Hopkins. This, to me, is the bright line deciding factor.

Also, have you considered that the weather in SC may be nicer. So, your call: freezing ghetto in Baltimore (with no concerts, premieres, nightlife, or celebrities), or a sunny ghetto in Los Angeles (with name brand, world-class everything).

I agree with the prior poster re academics. Outside of HYP and MIT, the general public really believes that all the universities in the US are of the same quality. So, Johns Hopkins and USC are comparable in anyone’s estimation on any resume. USNews has made a business of splitting hairs on a wig that no one wears.
