Can my son get in?

He is applying to Hopkins ED, and is a very non-traditional student

5 on AP US HISTORY
35 on ACT (35 MATH, 36 SCIENCE, 35 ENGLISH, 32 READING, 26 WRITING)
2250 SAT SUPER SCORE (760 MATH, 740 READING, 750 READING, 3 DIFFERENT TESTS)
SAT SUBJECT TESTS (780 MATH 2, 730 PHYSICS, 680 LITERATURE)
Works full time on a business I cofounded. (million dollar e-commerce company)
Great recommendations.
Taking 3 ap’s this year (BC Calc, Psych, Macroeconomics)
Honors in every class in all of high school
3.5 total GPA (3.1 freshman year, 3.5 sophomore year, 3.9 junior year, all not weighted)
Awesome ec’s (Editor in chief of political magazine, started charity basketball tournament, started you entrepreneur’s club, etc)

So… he have a solid shot, right?
Don’t want to get his hopes up…

Just have other choices, do not put all your eggs in any college basket. He has a shot, but agree GPA is a little low but ACT is great. Problem is, so many kids are taking the tests a zillion times and “learning” how to post those great scores. 3 APs this year, is there not other ones offered or did he exhaust what the school offered? Is Macro a semester or full year? Many are a semester. My accepted student came in with a much higher GPA similar test scores, and had done 12 APs through high school, just as a comparison for you. Everyone at the top schools brings in great ECs and recommendations, which makes it up in the air on who gets in. Depends on what they are looking for that year. Do not set your heart and all your hopes (or his actually) on any one school. That is way too risky. Just have him give it his best, with back-up plans that make him happy too. Good luck!

Maybe working full time in mom and pop’s business is ‘non-traditional’?

Working full time in his own business, and not going to school at all, would be more convincingly non-traditional.

I would treat Johns Hopkins as a reach for almost anyone.

If you’re looking for reassurance to reduce the stress of waiting for the real answer it ain’t gonna happen. Apply ED, have some backup plan if he’s rejected or deferred and find a way to quit obsessing over what your hypothetical odds are in the meantime.
