My senior daughter was contacted today by the coaching staff at Hopkins and she sent them her info for a pre-read. It seems last minute and may give her more difficulty in choosing the right team and school. She had narrowed her choice down to two very highly rated LACs after an Ivy backed out in August. She has official visits set up in October for both and was going to make a decision before November 1st.
My question is does any one know if JHU coaches have any pull with admissions? She has an unweighted 4.0, AP Scholar with distinction, National Merit Hispanic Scholar and a 32 ACT. The assistant coach told her that the ACT score was below what they usually take but her academics may counter balance her test score. I told my daughter to ask the coach next time they speak but I thought I might find some one here with JHU experience.
It really would depend on the sports. LAX is Div 1 at JHU, so the coach would have a tremendous pull on admissions. The other sports I believe are all Div 3, therefore it would depend on the relationship of that coach with the adcom. The fencing coach a few years back was known to have a strong influence on admissions and was able to get kids with your D’s stats in, even during the regular admission pool.
I know two students in the past two years who were recruited by Hopkins for D3 sports. Both had pre-reads and applied ED, and both are now attending and playing their sports.
We had a similar experience with JHU. Great school which showed interest, but they were much less definitive re the pre-read/offer process compared to the NESCACs. And my son was a top band recruit for Ivies academically, so we were surprised the JHU kept dragging their feet. Ultimately they gave him an offer, but after he already committed to a NESCAC - which we were fine with.
