Johns Hopkins

How hard is it to get into Johns Hopkins this year compared to other schools?

very…

i’ve been accepted to duke, northwestern, and cmu so far…

…and waitlisted at jhu…

^
yup…i got into northwestern, but waitlisted at JHU

This is the craziness of admissions this year. Son was accepted to JHU, waitlisted NU, and denied CMU.

In order to get into hopkins, does every part of the application have to be excellent?

Check out this thread…

If u apply ED it shouldnt be a problem.. people who applied RD are the ones who were applying to multiple top schools and have like super similar ECs (in my opinion, not that they are bad, they are repetitive and boring lol sorry)… if you can find away to make yourself stand out and represent ur ECs and have extremely good recommendations (JHU weighs a lot of value on Recs) i think ur a shoe in.

That’s just my 2 cents, i am not trying to insult anyone or anything, its an opinion and a observation stated

Financial aid is also a factor. They’re not need-blind.

sylenteck, JHU is need blind, just not for internationals–like many other top schools. Also, they consider need when admitting from the wait-list. This has been discussed ad nauseam.

Ah. Alrighty then.

Actually, I’m going to have to refute that. A rudimentary google search brings up:

“In Latting’s opinion, the biggest challenge to increasing diversity is financial aid. Since Hopkins is not a need-blind institution, the Financial Aid Office works on a fixed budget”

Hopkins is shown as not blind compared to the Ivies and some others:

Ambitiousteen, so if one gets into JHU regular, the recommendations have to be excellent?

It’s strange. I got into JHU. I was deferred and finally rejected at Duke and waitlisted at Wash U. Everyone’s responses seem to point to the fact that as long as you are qualified statistically, it’s really just a crapshoot after that.

sylenteck, I am going to refute your refutation with a post by an admissions officer from hopkins.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/johns-hopkins-university/318722-why-isn-t-jhu-need-blind.html

This states exactly what I have stated.

Go to post #12.

“Ambitiousteen, so if one gets into JHU regular, the recommendations have to be excellent?”

Well, from what ive seen, many of the ED applicants arent super super power houses in ECs, they know how to represent ECs and show them… they have great scores to as well, mainly anywhere from 3.7 gpa and up… so i would say it would play a big factor-recs/essays… cuz thats all JHU has to work with and if u already applied ED u have super chances. Remember, recs are also the other way of gettin a first impression of an applicant from a teachers perspective so i would say in JHU part they love excellent recs and along side with excellent scores and detailed ECs ur in man… thats what im doing, i gotta worry about SAT/ACT other than that i know ive impressed my teachers (seeing as they all constantly chat with me in the hallway making me miss like my morning classes and then going to go get a lateslip cuz i talked to a teacher) so if u got good relations in high school and enjoyed ur high school career and showed this on ur application from ur essay and a teacher has given u the best recs, ull impress the adcoms.

also, i looked at some of the RD applicants, and well, no uniqueness found except that each of them had similar math/science clubs and there were a couple with mix of varsity sports and couple had research to… overall the RD applicants in my opinion were great stat wise, but had no intriguing unique EC-personality wise

I got into Brandeis, Oberlin, Grinnell, Rochester, waitlisted at WashU, but didn’t get into JHU

By the way, i have 3 friends going to class of 2012, so im gettin this info from basing it on what they’ve told me, and from my general experiences. thats my 2 cents man im not trying to insult anyones ECs or anything, just make sure ur character shows in ur essay and continue to strive for success…

And if ur wondering about my stats or anything feel free to ask Milkmagn
im a junior, applying ED to JHU, taking SAT 1 in june 7th and ACT in june 14th… 4.0 gpa, ima DJ(hobby and job)/boxer-competitive/Tutor part time and lots of great volunteering stuff and awards… thing is im studying in canada so ECs vary from US and Canada, im working with what ive got… science/math related items are hard to find in ottawa ontario wher ei live… toronto has so many opportunities but i cant drive 4 hours everyday for an EC in toronto… Feel free to PM me or add me on AIM Milkmagn for any questions or like help eachother out if JHU is ur dream school and all (cuz its my dream school lol)

Alright, looks like I was wrong.
