Johnson and Wales

What is you opinion on this school, any help would be great. Thank You.

Well, Ive gotten 3 brochures (in huge envelopes) and 20+ emails from them.

I want to know how people think about it too.

I have a friend who went to Johnson and Wales in Charlotte for Culinary Arts. She absolutely loved it and came out with a well-paying job at a major hotel.

I knew someone who attended the school in Rhode Island. She found the weather to be very depressing. She enjoyed the school. She says that jobs were not a problem after graduation. This information is several years old.

Thank You. Any other feedback would be great

Dennis, you might want to search the archives. I believe that there was a poster who had a son attending this school. I don't think that she was happy with the school, but I just do not recall the specifics.

Johnson and Wales is not worth going to if you are not planning on majoring in culinary. The tuition the school charges is crazy (about 30,000)- you can go to a better school for much less money. The requirments are a joke and anyone can get in. Beware of there zero application fee, it is just a marketing tool to make you interested. The unofficial motto for this school is "if all else fails, Johnson and Wales"!!

KaRU, I completely agree. I'm in-state, and basically all of those who have exhausted other options of a higher education opt for culinary arts at J&W. Although, one person that has graduated from there has a job working for NASCAR at Lowe's Motor Speedway (however, being in-state isn't that big of a deal) and makes fairly good money. They cook for the drivers, he specifically does pastry. Granted, he was a wonderful student and unlike the others that I know that have opted to go there because they "couldn't do anything better," -- direct quote from someone I spoke with. However, I'm not saying culinary arts is a waste of time, but to those people, it was a last resort. If they can get in, I'm sure anyone can. I would shoot for a better school.

However, IF you want to go into culinary arts, J&W is an excellent choice.

If you were to get a full scholarship here, what would you do?

What do you want to study? What are your other options?

Well, I want to study Business. I have a lot of choices , Its just that I found the school somewhat intresting, but no one seems to have a positive opinion of it. I shall move on to other schools. Thank You.

As the kids at my school say...

"All else fails, Johnson and Wales!"

It's a good career university. IE, if you plan on going into a specific field such as hotel management, culinary arts, etc..

The school charges 30,000 a year, and absolutely provides nothing but Kitchens. The school has 0 notable amenities, the campus is not even nice, and i believe its an absolute rip off. When comparing Johnson and Wales to a regular 30,000 a year University you will be blown away at the difference. Johnson and Wales has good Chefs, however they stress well rounded education by teaching liberal arts so students can get a degree, however there professors are sub-par. I have examples if you want... Anyway The Florida campus is a disgrace, its not even a campus and if you pay 30,000 you should be ashamed. The Rhode Island Campus is a little bit nicer, however it still lacks anything worthy of 30,000 a year and Rhode Island itself is a horrible state with bad, depressing weather, and absolutely NOTHING going on.

I currently go to FIU which is around $14,000, and we have a beautiful campus, a huge gym, great notable professors, and great programs to name a few. This is 15,000 cheaper then JWU, and it has 10x more then JWU can ever hope to provide. I hope i helped and im completely honest.

The new Johnson&Wales campus in Charlotte is in the middle of downtown (lots of hotels , retaurants and nightlife) and pretty impressive looking.
I know a young man who got a 2 year culinary degree from there and got a good job right away as the kitchen manager in charge of food prep. for a large Christian retreat center.

I was also looking at johnson and wales though when ive done my research they are well known for there culinary arts. Im want to major in hotel management does anyone know if they have a strong program for that.

i really like the school in rhode island.Im also interested in going there for business...i just sent my transcripts a couple of days ago, so i expect to hear a decision from them in a couple of weeks...the school might not be very competitive but, all the people i know seem to be happy there..i wouldnt worry about the cost though. Most students get financial aid and dont owe alot of money when they graduate....
