Son applied RD to Washington and Lee. It is his first choice school. We are trying to decide if he should go ED2 or if that will kill his chances of getting merit money. Does anyone know what the make-up of Johnson usually is? His stats are good 34 ACT 35 superscore, good grades, many APs, lots of 5s, a 760 on an SAT 2 (W History) and he has some interesting ECs. He is white and not a first gen college student. If his chances of getting the Johnson are decent (40% or more) then he will risk going RD. Anyone have information to help us discuss this?
Sorry, but I don’t think anyone’s chance of getting the Johnson is 40%. It is very hard to predict who will get it. I have heard second hand that the essay is very important. My daughter is not a Johnson, but knows a lot of them. She knows very few who applied ED. Assuming your son has a high unweighted gpa and has shown interest, he sounds like he should get in RD, so I’m not sure why you consider RD risky with the profile you have listed.
Correct. Even those chosen to compete on campus during Johnson weekend don’t have a 40% chance of winning. They invite roughly 200, and around 10% of the entering class is awarded the scholarship.

Parent here, we understood 200 were invited during our campus visit but we were told 10% of incoming Freshmen class were Johnson Scholars.
