Looking for some information on the Johnson Scholarship. I have heard different stories about the financial need aspect of the Johnson and also curious about ED as it relates to the Johnson.

Do they give these scholarships primarily to kids with financial need? We are just outside the range for financial need based assistance but the tuition and fees at W&L will wipe out savings. Is there any hope for getting a Johnson if you cannot demonstrate financial need?

How does admission status effect consideration for the Johnson? If you are accepted via ED, do they look less favorably on you for the scholarship (knowing you are already committed and they don't need to "pull you away" from an Ivy for instance)?

We were in the same situation as you. My daugther received a Johnson without have any demonstrated need. Her selection was based solely on acedemic merit.

There are very few scholarships like this available in the US. We are very proud that she was selected.

I have read that a certain number of Johnsons are for need, but I don’t know this for sure and I don’t know if it is a deciding factor when choosing applicants to interview or only after the pool of Johnsons is set. I think Johnson is a merit scholarship. May be confusing because there are other scholarships available and they are also determined during the Johnsons interview visit. You have to attend that weekend to be in running for any scholarships (with exception of a few regional ones) My D went to Johnson interviews (met her best friend) and of the people she met that went on to get Johnson scholarship, one definitely had financial need, one definitely didn’t and another probably didn’t. I always advise talking to your admissions counselor with questions since procedures csan change from year to year.

I was a recipient of, and later an interviewer for, the Johnson Scholarship. The Johnson Scholarship is strictly a merit scholarship, but most of the other scholarships factor in need, and they’re distributed through basically the same process. During the orientation for conducting interviews, we were explicitly instructed not to take into account financial need or the probability of matriculation - a fairly excessive warning for the most part, as we received no financial information, except what applicants included in their essays. I know of at least one applicant who got a Johnson after applying ED.

We are hopeful for an invitation later this month. Grades, scores, activities, etc are all way, way up there, but we realize that it is a very, very competitive situation.

Kind of on the same topic, I applied for the Johnson but will they notify me even if I’m not a finalist? Like a no letter? Or will only the finalists hear? Thanks!

Hey, I’m thinking of applying for the scholarship next year (I wouldn’t be able to go to W&L without it). When results come out, would you guys who entered mind posting your stats? Thank you!

Benetoite, if you need a substantial amount of money to attend W&L, they have a great FA policy and would probably meet most of your need! Also, I’d advise looking into QuestBridge (W&L is a partner).

That’s the thing, I don’t qualify for aid any aid. Does W&L count assets? If they don’t, I might be able to qualify for some; I wouldn’t count on it though.

In addition to the FAFSA, W&L financial aid and scholarship applicants must complete the CSS. It has even more detailed questions (down to the make & model of cars your family drives).
