Joining a frat as a pre-med.

As a pre-med, would joining a fraternity be looked down upon by med schools? I'm looking specifically towards Phi Sigma Pi, which is supposed to be a honors/ dry fraternity. What impact, if any, would my joining this particular frat (or any other) have on the impression I present to med school? (ie. Would it help my chances?)

Also, would joining a frat be a good use of time for a pre-med?

Thanks.

I know a few pre-meds in Phi Sigma Pi. It’s not a real fraternity (social fraternity), and therefore is not in the Interfraternity council.

I don’t know how much of an honor it is when the requirements for getting in are 3.0 GPA. With grade inflation, that’s not very hard to get, even for the engineers.

Joining a frat won’t be looked down on when applying to med school, could help in that it is an extracurricular and you could get a leadership position which looks good on an application for anything or the person interviewing you could randomly have been in the same fraternity, but for med school probably wouldn’t help much. It certainly won’t hurt your app though and to help you get into med school shouldn’t be the only reason you have if you join one.

Couldn’t you just not tell the med schools that you joined a frat?
