I’m a hearing impaired high school student, and I’m quite intrigued by the prospect of joining a sorority and going through the “rush” experience. However, as a student with a mild to moderate hearing impairment, I’m a little nervous. Will it be harder for me to join a sorority? Will they tend to shy away from me because of this? For anyone who has a hearing impairment and attends college, or has a friend/child that does, does having a hearing disability negatively affect the “college experience”?
It honestly depends on the school. At my small liberal arts college, the people in our sororities definitely buck the stereotypes of a sorority at a big state school. My sorority has a couple of people with disabilities (including someone with a hearing impairment!), so I’d say it wouldn’t matter, but I don’t know about a larger school. You’d have to ask someone there.
