Can you join an athletic team without being involved with the sport directly in high school? If so, how hard would joining be? Particularly, tennis?

I imagine if you’re not very experienced at some sports it’s not a huge deal. Tennis, however, I seem to recall being fairly popular and might be difficult to make the team if you’re not already pretty good.

If you’re trying to join a sport without experience, you might want to pick something other than tennis. It’s highly ranked in its division and very competitive to get onto the team. If you have played competitively outside of HS, that’s a different matter - club tennis, for example - but they don’t tend to take novice players.

regardless of sport, it is probably easier if you are a semi-athletic female than if you are a semi-athletic male. Track is your best bet

The track team here is actually really good (for a D3) but if I’m not mistaken it’s no-cut. I’m hoping to play lacrosse and I have very little experience. That’s the good side of coming to a school that’s not athletically focused.

Men’s tennis was 8th in DIV III last year, and I believe women’s was 14th, meaning that if you’re not significantly better than high-school level, you aren’t making the team. Some teams at CMU you might be able to join on a whim, but tennis is not one of them.

I’d love to pick up lacrosse, but I’ve never held a lacrosse stick in my hands ever. The consequences of sacrificing after-school hours to babysit instead of joining lacrosse in HS is biting me in the butt =(

For both of our sake let’s hope lax is one of the whim sports :P

… wait… we have a lacrosse team?

Club Lacrosse =o

in general club teams go pretty unnoticed. rugby is probably the most visible, and that is because they are some pretty big dudes and a few girls rolling around in the mud on the cut a few days per week.

i’m on the club soccer team. it’s great fun, but you don’t get to live the high life of the varsity players :D. Other than that, i know of the men’s volleyball club team only because it is probably 50% composed of guys in my fraternity, and the club baseball team for which I have never once seen pictures of people actually playing, but a few friends have shirts so it must exist.

i’ve seen lax playing a handful of times this past semester, but curiously the only time I run into people wearing pennies is during particularly bro moments on the frat quad

what about golf players?
