Joining Military/ National Guard Instead of College

Sorry if this is in the wrong topic.

And I apologize for this very long post.

Hi to be honest with you guys. I am not ready for college, but my parents are making me go this fall. I am woefully behind my peers i.e. I have no real job, have no driver’s license , not interested in sex, and cannot make friends. I am not ready for college at all. I need 1 more year in order to be ready for college I have the mentality of a 16 year old. I told my parents that I was not ready for college and suggested gap years and trade schools to my parents, but they will not budge. They are forcing me to go to college this fall. If I don’t go to college they will kick me out of their house.(I will be living at home for college instead of a dorm). I will be going to the University of Maryland College Park and I will be majoring in Urban Forestry. I do not care about urban forestry, but my parents are making me major in urban forestry. My parents are super excited about me going to college and they want me to get ready for college, but to be honest, I do not care about college at all. My dad however said that if I refuse to go to college I can join the military.

I am 18 years old by the way.

I will be old enough to join.

I will try to avoid college at all costs

It is August and 4 weeks from first day of school but I have been contemplating on skipping the first day of college and skipping more days of college if I can.

I have even gotten in a fight with my mom about not going to college today.

This has gotten bad.

Should I join the military/ National Guard instead of college?

I am sick of school, tests, lectures, and homework.
To me college will be just a variation of high school; but with a little more freedom.

I need a change.

The military/National Guard might help me grow up faster.
For now I would rather be fighting in a war than go to college.
I will try to toughen up and not be afraid to fight for Uncle Sam.

God Bless America.

Other options would be great.

-Thank you all

I liked the trade school idea. We are woefully short of good tradesmen and it’s getting worse. Wouldn’t training to be an electrician be sorta cool? You could make good money on that and go to school later if you wanted.

The bad news is that even the military has a lot of schools, tests and lectures.

The problem is my parents won’t let me do trade school. Can I do a trade in the military?
-Thanks

What’s wrong with your folks? Don’t they ever listen to Mike Rowe?

Yeah you could get a trade in the military and it would be relatively easy to move to civilian work.

Thanks that would be great. One more thing what kind of trades are there in the Military/National Guard? Just a few trades named would be great.
-thank you very much

The military’s offerings are too numerous to mention here, but it would depend on what your ASVAB tests tell the recruiters your aptitude is best suited for. You can do work in IT, intelligence analysis, cybersecurity, aircraft maintenance, tank and vehicle maintenance, administrative, etc.

Make sure to get everything a recruiter promises you in writing. If it’s not in your contract, it’s not an enforceable promise.

You know what? I’ll just suck it up and get the work done and go to college. I’ll be miserable, but i’ll be more miserable being kicked out by my parents if I don’t go to college.

I don’t think that joining the military is a good idea if you’re doing it solely to get out of college. It’s totally natural to feel nervous about going away. There are a lot of people who feel similarly. I don’t have a real job (I tutor other students sometimes though), I have my license but hate driving, and I’m not so into partying. You’ll find friends. You might just need to put yourself out there and introduce yourself. It’ll be okay. In terms of sex, if you don’t want to do it, then no one will force you or make you feel bad about it. There’s a lot more acceptance these days about sexuality, and if you don’t know about the asexuality spectrum, you might want to read about it; it could apply to you. Also, you’ll have to take general education classes. Maybe in the course of hose, you’ll find something you like more than urban forestry. Either way, don’t stress. You’ll do alright.

Your right I should just suck it up and go to class and get the work done. I think i’ll get good grades. I posted in an other forum about skipping the first day of college. I will go to prevent getting caught by my parents. I won’t mind being a loner in college. If I am a loner, no one would no that I am socially behind. I don’t really have much friends anyway.

-Goodnight everyone.
