I’m almost completely sure I’ll be attending GWU as part of the class of 2019, and I was wondering about how student organizations are handled. I saw the online directory but was wondering how to go about joining some of the groups when I start school. I was also want to know how common it is to be part of student organizations (other than greek life) and if the groups are generally organized and productive.
Well, there’s usually a student org ‘fair’ in the fall that has a lot of the groups represented. In addition, I think freshmen automatically get put onto an email chain about student events and whatnot. All you have to do is pick a few you think sound interesting and go to one of their meetings. If you like the group it’s pretty easy to join.
As far as how common it is, I’d say it’s quite common. Most people on campus will be part of at least one organization, whether it’s a sorority/fraternity, student org, or even club/intramural sports. As far as the groups’ organization and productivity, it’s totally dependent upon the group and its leadership. Leadership will change year to year, so it’ll be up to the current leader to set the tone.
The organizations want YOU as much if not more than you want them! They will be sure to have a big presence at all the freshman activites so you have a chance to learn about them. Most of my friends were in one or more groups - from acapella singing to politically affiliated to religious to sports. Have a great time!
