I’m applying to UPenn via common application. On their supplementary material, they mention, “Joint and Accelerated Program.” What exactly is it? Do I have to apply to this program? (extra essay…meh) What would the advantages be? Would it affect my chance whatsoever?

Also, I’m an engineering guy. Do you think it’s a bad idea for me to apply to UPenn? How is UPenn engineering?

Lastly, I know UPenn has a great business program. One of my dream as a kid was to become a stock broker. Would going to Wharton help me tremendously? And should I apply to Wharton? Or, should I apply to Engineering college at UPenn? (the thing is my taste might change)

you may apply to M&T. I think its jerome fisher management and technology. You can experience both. Yeah, penn engineering isn't all that great in general. But the bioengineering department is one of the top 10 in the nation and (I think) the best among the ivies. It depends upon the program..

I second sristi: it sounds like your interests are a perfect fit for the M&T program!

A joint program is one in which you study to fulfill the requirements of more than one course/degree. For example, with the M&T program, one would end up with a BSc in Econ. as well as an engineering-orientated degree, but as both of these would be obtained in the space of 4 years (as opposed to more than that - which is what would usually happen), the M&T program is an accelerated program.

You don't have to apply to one (in fact, places in these programs are very limited), but if you do so and are accepted, it will be of great use to you. The most obvious benefit is that you will get two degrees from a renowned institution in the same amount of time that most people get one! Applying to a joint program shouldn't hurt your chances of admission though, because you have to indicate which single degree school (i.e. Wharton OR SEAS) you wish to be considered for if you aren't accepted into the joint program (thus you have the same chance of being accepted by Penn as anyone else applying to one of their single-degree schools).

I don't know much about SEAS, but I know that Wharton is among the best (if not the best) undergrad business schools worldwide!

Alex (assuming that is in fact your real name),

Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it. =]

I think I am in fact going to apply to Jerome Fisher Program in Management & Technology (M &T) and then choose Wharton. It seems that applying to Joint program wouldn't hurt my chance at being admitted, but just to double-check,

Applying to Wharton via M&T (meaning if I don't get it) is virtually same as just applying to Wharton to begin with right? Not getting in M&T doesn't affect any aspects of my application?

I can't see how it could affect your chances, but if you want to check, go to the M&T website. If it doesn't say anything in the FAQ section or something like that, there should be an email address you can send your question to. Just make sure it looks like you want M&T and not Wharton alone! lol
