Joint Science Department

Can anyone tell me about the Joint Science Dept/Program (I want to do pre-med track)
And if you are a part of it, what do you like about it and how is it beneficial.

check out post #6 on this thread <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/scripps-college/569094-first-year-scripps-women.html?highlight=Science%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/scripps-college/569094-first-year-scripps-women.html?highlight=Science</a></p>

I'm not pre-med but the JSD is great- it comprises of Pitzer, CMC, and Scripps. Faculty offices are set up where there are study areas right next to it so that you can study then easily go in and ask questions. Science is strong at Scripps, and biology is one of the most popular majors. There is pre-med advising and from what I've heard it's wonderful, and in the past years the acceptance rate to first or second choice med school is 100% or nearly 100%.

As historymom said, I'm in the AISS class so if you're interested in multiple sciences take a look. If you are pre-med though, the AISS class is iffy because from what I've heard, med schools look for different things and some do not like interdisciplinary classes. It really depends, and if you go and have pre-med advising they will talk to you about it.

Any more questions, feel free

thanks for your advice!
can you also tell me a bit about scripps. just some particulars that you really like and what you find special in scripps.

Gracieloos- the website says that students should have a strong high school background in science and calculus. Do you know of anyone that is in the AISS who is taking calculus at the same time?

Karen, I do know people who decided to add a 5th class and take Calculus II or III (whatever they placed in) while in AISS. But I haven't heard anyone yet who hasn't at least taken AP Calculus AB. Having at least taken AP Calculus AB I think is very important for the class, especially for the physics portion. You get into things really quickly, and we don't use class time to review anything.

bballchica, I will answer your question as soon as I can!

bballchica,

I love Scripps, and am so glad I made the decision to attend. If you're asking for particular things that I enjoy, then I would have to say it's quite a few things.

I love the people I've met here so far and the friends that I've made. Everyone here is friendly, and it is not a competitive atmosphere at all; it's helpful, and your fellow students are willing to help you. Students here are mature, and it is so refreshing, coming from high school where people can be obnoxious and immature. Students here are aware of their world; giving an example, election night this week. Everyone was huddled around a TV or at the Motley, eagerly watching the results. Also, coming from a town that is somewhat conservative, it is also refreshing to find a more liberal atmosphere.

Another thing I love is my professors so far. For AISS, the three professors that I have are really helpful, and incredibly good at what they do. My physics professor is by far one of the best teachers I've had, and he's incredibly helpful in his office hours, making sure you really understand the material. He isn't condescending or intimidating and really is committed to his teaching. My Core professor is super nice as well, and really tries to encourage discussion in our class, making sure we understand what we're reading. My writing professor is awesome and incredibly down-to-earth. She's extremely helpful in writing papers and trying to give me ideas of what to write about, and she is completely understanding when I say I don't come from a good writing background in high school. I could ramble on about the professors I have, and it is really refreshing coming from a mediocre senior year with not the best teachers.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask more or message me!
