Journal Publication

How much pull would publishing in a major journal (e.g Nature/Science level) have on undergraduate transfer admissions? Would this be strong enough to be a hook, or just like a tipping over point if you're right on the line?

I would say it adds a serious strength to the application, depending on the nature of publication, of course. Are you a co-author with a professor or single-handedly wrote the paper?

Single-handedly, and it’s not published yet; I’ve received a reply seeing what they’d like reworded (one section was a little vague) and after having that corrected, would want it resubmitted.

EDIT: But yeah, was wondering what sort of draw that would have in regard to transfer admissions.

Is that an academic peer-reviewed journal? I think it will be considered as serious craving for learning and advancement. Also, as going above and beyond, putting extra effort ,great EC so to speak. Good luck.

It is, and I understand it’s a great EC…I just don’t know if it’ll be weighted the same as another “great EC,” or if it could perhaps be worth a good deal more. I just yeah, know it’ll help, but I kinda want to know if it’ll be marked or marginal, to have a better approximation of where to apply that will be reasonable as a match or safety.

I have never worked as an adcom and thus cant provide details. Sorry :)

Any other thoughts?

it definitely can’t hurt. i doubt it will make or break you, but it will be noticed.
