As of right now I am interested in a career in journalism and applied to a pretty good variety of schools, but have a dilemma. Assuming I don't go to grad school after undergrad AND also assuming that no matter where I go to college I will be writing for the school paper, doing internships, etc....what would be most advisable?

A-going to a school with an amazing journalism program but decent at everything else(like Syracuse, UTexas, USC). At schools like this I would do a double major: journalism and something else (perhaps physics or history or poli sci)

OR

B-going to a school with good prestige but no journalism major offered (think Emory, Rice, Vanderbilt level prestige and the tiny chance of a Duke/Northwestern acceptance). At these schools I would major in history, poli sci, physics, whatever and maybe try for a minor in journalism or at the very least take classes in journalism. Side note: I didn't apply to Northwestern's Medill school.

So what helps more in landing a good job in the field right out of college: the prestige of the school as a whole or the prestige of the journalism program?

Utexas is actually more than "decent" in everything else... in fact, the majority of its academic programs are ranked higher than most the schools you mentioned in your 'B' plan (Emory, Rice, and Vanderbilt for sure).

The reason I listed it as decent was cause of the sheer size of the school in contrast with the smaller private schools where you get more attention. Im still most likely going to UT due to instate tuition.

agreed... the only thing that keeps UT less prestigious at the undergrad level is its sheer size and relatively lower selectivity compared to smaller schools. (Plus the fact that it's required by law to be at least 90%+ instate undergrads.) It has nothing to do with actual faculty quality/departmental strengths (which is amazing in terms of pure breadth).

Can you mix journalism with an honors program like Plan II at UT?

Its too late for me to apply to Plan II plus I need a major in College of Liberal Arts for it, and my two choices were in College of Communications & College of Nat. Sciences.

Couldn't let this stand. It may be too late for you to apply to Plan II, Yonge, but it is not the case that you have to have a major in the College of Liberal Arts. If you are accepted into Plan II, your major is Plan II. Most Plan II students also have another major, and that can be any program into which you are accepted. One of the hosts when my daughter was looking was a Plan II/Business double major.

When I went on to the bealonghorn.net site under my page it had me eligible to apply ONLY for Dean's Scholars and it didn't allow me to apply to Plan II. I don't have the link on me but I remember the site saying that in order to apply to Plan II, I had to select a major within CoLA.
