Journalism at NYU

Journalism, to me, sounds like a popular study this year. I'm basing this on students from my school. However, I would like to know how popular/competitive Journalism is at NYU, and how hard is it to get accepted.

Does anyone know?

Its in CAS.. very popular.

It's most likely very competitive, seeing as Journalism is to New York City as The Composition is to English Class. I myself chose NYU because of the number of opportunities NYC offers for Journalism; apparently it's facile to obtain internships and develop connections that will ultimately benefit you if you plan on remaining in the city after graduation. That's my plan, at least.

journalism is an extremely popular program at nyu. i believe they are now making it required for journalism majors to double major, in order to reduce the number of people taking the classes at one time. they even offer saturday classes now. journalism students also, for certain classes, have to get approval slips, and this involves waiting in line- i had a friend get in line at 6am last semester. you can declare the major, but beware that you will probably have to wait a few semesters to get the classes you really want (juniors/seniors have priority to get access codes in order to register), and even then, you might not get the times you want. some journalism classes are now 4 hours a day and once a week to keep up with the demand. it's also difficult to get nyu to approve internships and things- there's a certain process you have to go through. make sure journalism is really what you want to do, because it might take you the whole four years to get all the classes you want done.

^ yes , true -- I checked their site

On the website it said any NYU CAS student can major in journalism if he/she wishes to do so... so I wouldn't think that it would be competitive to get into. Popular? Yes. But not competitive.

but journalism is at CAS, so a CAS student would be a journalism student

anonymous88-- where in Long Island, NY?

Still a little confused.

The South Shore. & The Hamptons.

Is journalism really a good choice for someone who wants to become a journalist? I've heard from a couple of sources that newspapers and magazines prefer graduates from liberal arts fields. In fact, almost anything but journalism.

You're right, and I'm fully aware of that. Thats why NYU's Journalism program requires you to double-major-- Journalism for techniques and another firm liberal arts study for content.

SO what does double major mean? Like pick the print/broadcast/media criticism major? Or something else completely? Please help because i got accepted to cas for journalism.

Orange,

I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure the double major has to be in CAS-e.g. math, econ, bio, chem, history, etc., so you won't be able to do stuff like print/media/whatever. You should probably call the department at NYU and just ask.

Well print/media criticisim/broadcast are the journalism divisions.
When I asked a girl who is majoring in journalism at nyu she said you were required to pick one as a double major.. i was wondering if that was what is meant in this thread of if indeed it is something like english, history, math, etc.

also i don't see anything about this on the cas journalism site

<a href="http://journalism.nyu.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://journalism.nyu.edu/</a></p>

the fourth and fifth paragraph should tell you everything
