Journalism--Bedhead, are you there?

Hello to all--

Well, I'm playing the waiting game right now with my grad school apps. I've applied to only four schools, but I have a good feeling about pretty much all of them. Here are my stats and schools:

Undergrad:
Ohio State, 3.77, Honors degree, double major in English and Spanish, plenty of extracurriculars
GRE: 740Q, 670V, 5.0AW

Grad Schools:
Columbia
Medill
Mizzou
NYU

Anyway, my end goal is to be a foreign correspondent, or at least report on Spain in some fashion. I studied there for a semester as an undergrad and worked there as a teacher for a year after graduation. I feel like J-school is my first step to that goal, but I'm not sure what the next one should be. Columbia is my first choice for J-School, followed by Medill because of the GloJo program. I wanted to do GloJo at NYU, but they don't offer anything on Europe outside of French studies. Would a degree in IR be my best bet? I know Columbia has SIPA, and I was looking at the program with Sciences Po, but my French sucks. I also don't want to stray too far from Spain for too long...as time passes, my language will atrophy. As it stands, I'd consider myself fluent and near-native.

Any recs as to what I should think about? I mean, I know there are a lot of variables...but I want backups to simply going into the workforce to fast-track me toward my goal. I'm researching degree programs in Spain, IR, and Fulbright opportunities. Anyone who wants to weigh in...I would greatly appreciate it.

I also forgot to mention…I focused on creative writing as an undergrad. I wrote a few freelance pieces for an area newspaper and also kept a detailed travel blog on my experiences living abroad when I studied in Spain. When I went back to Madrid, I started writing for an English-language magazine and became a staff writer there. Granted it didn’t pay much, but I got to write about travel, entertainment, and culture. I still write for them, albeit remotely, but I think everything all combined I should look good for my schools.

Anyway, I’m still working on hypotheticals. For example, if I graduate from J-school, should I just pack up shop and move to Spain to write from there, or only go abroad if I get offers for work.

All suggestions are deeply appreciated.

You should check out mediabistro.com

They have a great forum that can answer alot of your questions. From what I heard, freelancers who file copy from foreign locations stand a better chance of getting hired as professional journalists than those who work their way up the corporate ladder (Foreign correspondence positions are considered amongst the toughest jobs to get)

I too applied to J-School programs and I am anxoiusly waiting for the results.

I think your profile is pretty strong so you should not have too many problems getting into the programs you want.

Good luck!

thanks sheelo. what schools have you applied to? maybe we’ll end up seeing one another.

I actually applied to 6 programs- 5 in journalism and 1 in communication studies (Georgetown):

Northwestern Medill
USC Annenberg
NYU Carter
UNC Chapel Hill
Indiana
Georgetown CCT (communication culture and technology program)

My top choices so far are Medill and Georgetown’s (CCT) though both are reaches at this point (3.5 GPA, 590V 690Q 3.5 AW and with limited experience)

sorry…but bump? bedhead, are you there? i’d really love for you to weigh in. thanks.
