Journalism/Communications Opportunities at Rice...?

Hi guys! I hope that this message finds you very well!

I’m currently a senior in high school and I’ve been very interested in Rice University for some time now. I just had a couple of questions that I was hoping you might be able to answer for me…?

Rice seems like an amazing school with lots of opportunities. I’m interested in either going into medicine or news/sports broadcasting (I know they’re very different…) but, while I know that Rice offers a pre-med route, when I looked into communications I didn’t see any majors in that field offered, etc.

So, I was wondering what your take would be regarding whether or not Rice could offer me classes/activities in the journalism/broadcasting field…? I can guess that because there aren’t any particular majors regarding communication studies, those opportunities would be limited–but I was wondering nonetheless… Is there a school news paper or television station that I could possibly take part in?, Are there possible internships I could take if I were to choose broadcasting journalism over medicine later on during my undergraduate years?, etc.

Thank you so much for your honest feedback, I really appreciate it and find it extremely helpful during the college application process!

The school newspaper is the Rice Thresher. http://www.ricethresher.org. It is open to all that want to be a p art of it. Others will have to answer about the rest of your question.

Thank you so much @Houston1021! Just a follow up, do you know if Rice has a school broadcasting station as well? Thanks!

They have a radio station. https://ktru.org

Rice doesn’t have a tv station or communications major. I’ve always heard Syracuse is good for sports broadcasting and Northwestern and Missouri are good for journalism.

Okay thank you so much for the information @Houston1021 I really appreciate it!!!

Just to add on, there are certainly internships you could do in journalism and communications. One of the Center for Career Development career clusters is “Arts, Communication, and Entertainment,” which would help you find opportunities, and I remember that during my freshmen year, someone with the Houston Chronicle came to talk about summer internship opportunities in journalism as well. Houston does have a lot of opportunities in this area, even if Rice doesn’t have a major specific to this field. Hope this helps!

Rice has a very strong Kinesiology program, which is a nice blend between your interests in medicine and human sports management. Though there isn’t a specific communication component, you might find this popular program interesting.

Ohhhh okay awesome! Thank you so much @Srabookworm and @Trotskii I’ll keep this under my radar!
