Journalism double major?

Hi so I’m a senior in high school majoring in journalism and I wanted people’s opinions on what double majors could work well. I was going to do political science with the intention of focusing on political journalism but I wanted to know: would that pigeon hole me too much if I became interested in something else journalism wise? Would one of these other secondary majors be stronger or more useful?
Thanks!

Potential double majors
Journalism and _________

  • Digital communications and media
  • Media, culture, and communications
  • Advertising?
  • Marketing/digital marketing
  • Political science/politics
  • Management/management communication (and related management degrees)
  • Photography and imaging
  • Public policy
  • Public relations
  • Publishing?

What colleges are you looking at?

Many schools require a double because the odds for journalism students to succeed are low. I experienced this at Syracuse. I doubled with history which interested me but had no professional relevance. Looking back and on your list I’d say digital marketing. It’s the most job relevant at least at first glance. In the end, though, you should pursue one you can really have a passion for.

Some of my top ones are: Northeastern, Emerson, GWU, BU, NYU, Pace, and Penn State. I’m applying to some others too but these are first choice schools for me

Thank you, and yes I’ve heard a lot of colleges make that a requirement for journalism students. I appreciate the insight. I feel like that list is stuff I could see myself actually liking (for instance I excluded business and finance because idc how useful they are I couldn’t survive four years of classes related to those haha). Thanks again so much for your thoughts!

I would wait to see until you actually start college, if possible. Explore a little bit your first year and see what you like. If you’re wondering what to apply for, if you have extracurriculars related to one of them, choose that one since you have “evidence” to back it up and kind of know what you’re getting into.

That’s a good idea, thank you. I was trying to get a sense of good directions but I figured of course that my final choice would be left to when I declare my major.
