I'm considering applying to Northwestern's Medill School for a masters in Journalism. I have a 3.4 GPA with an undergraduate degree in journalism. I have not taken the GRE yet. Is Northwestern out of my league? Is my GPA too low to even bother? Also, does anyone know of other good programs in Chicago?

No, Northwestern is definitely not out of your league. From what I know, applying to graduate school is a holistic kind of thing -- more so than applying to undergraduate schools. Admissions committees, for the most part, will look at your entire profile: your GPA, your GRE scores, letters of rec, writing samples, etc. I don't know of any top-notch J-schools in the Chicago area other than Northwestern. But if you feel Northwestern is a good fit for you, then you should apply there.

Also, see this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=32793

And just for your information...

The average undergraduate GPA for the J-school graduate student body at two other top J-schools:

USC: 3.44
Berkeley: 3.5

So, a 3.4 GPA definitely shouldn't stop you from applying.

Thank you very much for the information!
