I am currently a freshmen at TAMU. In my junior year I will be eligible for an internship. I'm a political science major, and minoring in journalism. I want to intern at CNN or NBC News but I attend school in College Station and the network headquarters are in New York/Atlanta. How would be able to even qualify for those internships? Or are those specifically for schools in New York or Atlanta?

You would apply to their internship programs. Generally, major national news outlets open their internship programs to a pool of candidates from around the country.

Note, of course, that internships at major national news organizations such as CNN and NBC are going to be highly competitive and are likely to go to experienced student journalists. You may wish to look for lower-profile, less-competitive internships at first in order to build a stronger resume for future applications.

That makes a lot of sense. So it would be better for me to intern at a lower profile position such as my local television station or newspaper which would help my intern application for a future intern spot at a high profile network?
Thanks so much!
